That time when we made 13 bridesmaids bouquets! 😂😍💐

Life on the farm so far this month...

1🌼 The flower fields are busting with colour and texture at this time of year, despite the heat and drought. Doesn't this panicum make you want to brush your hands through it?! 😍
2 🌼 The snapdragons continue to give. This variety is called Avignon Silver (no, I don't know why!)
3 🌼 You can see the different layers of flowers here as we look down towards the tunnels.
4 🌼 We've just started harvesting Amaranth. It adds a lovely texture and movement to bouquets.
5 🌼 Much of these last couple of weeks has been focused on getting our water-saving game up to scratch to help with watering and irrigation. These IBC units are a great help during the drier periods.
6 🌼 These are the faces of two women who successfully got the main water tank filling again! 🥳💪🏻 (sadly that moment was short lived)
7 🌼 Cosmos going strong, in lots of different colourways because we (and our customers!) love them ALL.
8 🌼 Dahlias just getting into their stride.... we can't wait to start harvesting these in quantities again!

One thing we try and do at this time of year is make sure we're harvesting flowers for drying. This helps us extend the season, giving us dried blooms to work with over the Autumn and Winter. We use in bouquets and wreaths. These echinops dry beautifully and add a wonderful texture to arrangements. We also love drying strawflowers, statice, honesty, poppy seedheads and craspedia.

Taking a short break from lovely flower photos to share a bit of the reality for us this summer. Wales is not known for being dry, even at this time of year, but in a first for TDW we are facing drought. A combination of dry weather and heat has killed off some crops (bye bye Malope! 😢), and our (massive!) rainwater harvesting tank has run dry, which means our tunnel irrigation is off. Hand-watering is doable in the short-term, but massively time consuming, and we have too much to give everything the drenching it needs, so we're having to let things go. Yields are reduced, it's hard to keep seedlings alive, and it's all very stressful. Just keeping it real for you all folks! And let's call it what it is - not just summer, but a noticeable increase in weather extremes caused by climate change. We're hanging in there, we do still have flowers for our weddings but we are having to say no to wholesale orders which breaks our hearts. We know it's not just us but the reality is really tough. How are you getting on? Our DM's our open to anyone struggling ❤️

Our favourite flower this month is the snapdragon! We love how many different varieties are available, and grow a good number of them ourselves, because they all have something different to offer. They come in an incredible array of colours, and we can't get enough of the frilly texture. We wouldn't be without them!

Other stars of the show this July include achillea, cosmos, and emerald bead cress.
