Our two-day York National Book Fair is only 30 days away – doors open Friday 12th and Saturday 13th September at York Racecourse. Save the date for the largest fair of the year!

From its modest beginnings at the White Swan Inn in York in 1974 with just 20 exhibitors, the York Book Fair has grown into the largest rare, antiquarian & out-of-print book fair in the UK and Europe. At the fair, you will find books over 500 years old, be able to review copies of recently published works, and everything in between. Our fair is open to everyone young and old, and is a great place to start collecting. With over 100,000 books for sale, where else can you look at, touch, enjoy, and purchase so many rarities under one roof.

Join us at York Racecourse: there’s a free shuttle bus from the Railway Station (Memorial Gardens) to the fair every 20 minutes.

What is PBFA? it stands for Provincial Booksellers Fairs Association. The idea of bookseller Gerry Mosdell was to take books out to the people with “Book Fairs”. The first event was held in the Hotel Eden in Kensington in 1972. The Fairs expanded rapidly and after the first York Book Fair in October 1974 the Provincial Booksellers’ Fairs Association or PBFA was founded.
We are proud to be members and have personally exhibited both relatively locally but also as far away as Skye and Bristol. The York bookfair now regularly attracts more than 200 booksellers from around the UK and further afield.
They are essentially pop-up bookshops with individual stall holders each bringing a selection of interesting books for sale. This allows the visiting public to physically interact with the books examining them in person is far better than a written description or photographs. And its a day out for booksellers to leave their shops and be a bit sociable which ultimately brings the bookselling community a little closer together. After 50 years we're still visiting, exhibiting and selling at bookfairs so all in all Gerry's idea was an excellent one.
Very sadly Gerry recently passed away at the age of 88 - he hadnt yet retired and was still enjoying selling books from his shop The Junction Book Shop, and at fairs organised by his PBFA.
He will be missed but his lasting legacy of continuing bookfairs will certainly be with us for a long time to come.
Thank you Gerry.

It is with great sadness that I post my beloved husband and soul mate Gerry Mosdell passed away peacefully at home aged 88.
Gerry was an antiquarian bookseller; he opened his first bookshop in North Devon in 1964 and has been trading continuously ever since. His wife Glenda still runs the Junction Bookshop in Llandudno Junction, and although Gerry was retired, he was in the bookshop most days. This year he celebrated 60 years in the book trade, and in over 50 of those years he was involved in organising book fairs. Gerry was very proud to be the founding member of the PBFA (The Provincial Booksellers’ Fairs Association), a not for profit organisation which had its first fair in London in 1972. His idea was to bring the books to the people, and he was very successful with some fairs having to close their doors to the public as too many people came.
Gerry’s approachability, openness, kindness and generosity shone through to all who met him. He was instrumental in supporting and promoting the early careers of many young aspiring booksellers.
