For all those in a purl! or a circle, group or club of knitters! and anyone who loves knitting for pleasure or business we have a lovely selection of books just in for you to discover in our huge Craft Department. The history of knitting is fascinating, for example even after the introduction of the stocking frame by William Lee in 1589, that transformed textile production, hand knitting has to this day continued as both a business industry and art work but as an individual craft too.

The first ever performance of this was Venice in 1851! Rigoletto (baritone) was court jester to the Duke of Mantua (tenor), sixteenth century Mantua. ‘Tiffany blue and ranunculus in a riot of pastel colours’, Between You and Me, thoughts on life, loves and everything can be found at the end of Elizabeth Noble’s novel Between a Mother and Her Child, published by Penguin in 2012. Continuing our Author Series N could stand for a number of amazing authors, some of whom have books we have available as pictured. All of Noble’s first seven novels have made the Sunday Times top 10 fiction best-seller’s lists, her first book The Reading Group (2004) went straight to No.1. After working in publishing as an executive she said that ‘she finally did what I had been threatening to do for years’ and wrote the first 100 pages of the novel. However, it would take 9 months before she finally plucked up the courage to send it to an agent! All seven of her books have made it into this prestigious listing, and we have several of them for you!
After a break with family her next book The Family Holiday was published in 2020. She also writes short stories, and articles for newspapers and magazines. Visit soon for any ‘N’ books you fancy, or indeed any of our huge stock of fiction titles!

We’ve arrived at M, lots to choose from, but we have in stock all three of Hilary Mantel’s Wolf Hall Trilogy, so if you fancy immersing yourself in historical fiction pop along soon! Hilary Mantel’s (1952-2022) novels it has been said make 99% of contemporary literary fiction feel utterly pale and bloodless by comparison (The Times). Her epic trilogy, about the rise of a boy from nowhere to become the second most powerful figure in England, to Henry VIII, and the political upheavals of court that went on in the King’s quest for an heir, have won the Booker prize not once but twice (Wolf Hall 2009, Bring Up the Bodies 2012). Her 2003 autobiography Giving Up the Ghost is a raw, candid memoir focusing on her haunted childhood, illnesses and childlessness and her posthumous A Memoir of My Former Self (2023) gathers her essays, journalism and reflections on her career and personal life together.

Harry Sinclair Lewis (1885-1951) was the first author from the US to win the Nobel Prize for Literature (1930), having turned down the Pulitzer in 1926, as he felt it had not been awarded for literary merit but American exceptionalism. The third son of Edwin Lewis, a doctor of Welsh descent, and Emma his wife, he became one of the most financially successful authors ever published in America. His unsparing realism and satire reflected social problems of the time, and were infused in his many novels, poetry and plays as well as a huge number of short stories. Over a period of 40 years he published at times almost one story a month! Several of his writings were critical of US capitalism and materialism, but so too for his strong characterisation of modern working women. As pictured if this piques your interest in anything American, history, politics and more, especially in the current economic environment, we have a well-stocked USA Department. See you soon!

Continuing our featured Author’s Series we are up to J. Diving into crime we have several titles by PD James, a pseudonym for Phyllis Dorothy James, later Baroness James of Holland Park, especially known for her Dalgliesh Mysteries, featuring Adam Dalgliesh, police commander and poet. Her first novel Cover her Face (1962) we have in stock.
Born in 1920 in Oxford, she attended high school but in her mid teens she was caring for her two younger siblings, her mother having been admitted to a psychiatric hospital. She left school at 16 as it was clear her family couldn’t afford for her to go to university. Later having to support her Royal Army Medical Corps doctor husband and two daughters during her husband’s illness, she took evening classes in hospital administration, securing then a job in charge of psychiatric units (NHS), from which two books emerged. Later she took the Civil Service exams, coming third in the whole country. The official letter starting Dear Sir with the Sir crossed through and replaced with Madam, it was so rare for a woman to apply at that time. She worked in the Home Office (1968-1979), whilst writing. She died, a life peer, in 2014. See pictures for more of her novels to be found in our extensive Crime Fiction department.
Wishing you all a happy New Year, see you soon!
