If you've stopped by our shop you might have noticed our picture of Granny Mutch and wondered why we called the shop after her.

We wanted to name the space after a historical character. An example we had was F***y Trollope’s - the restaurant in Glasgow named for a famous woman who worked in a cafe there entertaining people with dance and music from her home country in Brazil. Likewise, we thought it would be great to anchor the space in the history of this area and that's when we learned about our namesake; Author Kirstin Innes immediately got the brief and directed us to the below website and details of Granny; it seems she sold odds and ends here - perfect!

Best of all, we learned that the name Granny Mutch is used across central Scotland to describe women who wore the style of bonnet pictured - known as a mutch. It has also evolved to have a generic meaning describing children dressing up.. e.g. "Look at her, she is like wee Granny Mutchie..."

So we know there were many a Granny Mutch across Scotland, but this one was Lochwinnoch's. We think she is fabulous.

Thanks to Brian Smith and his brilliant website, and for providing the image for us. https://www.pbthecairn.com/people/past-generations

Great news for Lochwinnoch!

🏛️ Brilliant news for Lochwinnoch! The community has secured £90,000 to develop a heritage project proposal that'll breathe new life into the historic centre. The Cornerstones project will empower local people to shape their town's future while celebrating its unique architecture and history. This is what community-led regeneration looks like! 💚

We have so many people and organisations to thank and acknowledge for their help bringing our new project to life. Here are just a few:

We are so happy with the decision to work with Finnie Welsh and Ben Richardson. Finnie and Ben did a solid three months of stripping the place and bringing it back to life. It seems they can turn their hands to anything; from welding the steel shelf brackets from scratch to building all the furniture, carpentry, rebuilding walls, changing locks, tiling, painting and wallpapering, and plumbing too! Their can-do attitudes were really appreciated and they were very understanding about the ever-changing plans as we developed ideas and problem solved as we went. They always had creative solutions and you can see their input in the finished space. We would whole-heartedly recommend them for other projects big or small.

Lisa Davies from Shrubs to Suds has done an incredible job of dressing our windows and developing ideas for the window boxes and decoration around the doorway. She also helped us put together the display with the sewing machine that you see when you enter the shop. There is still more to come on this but it is all looking brilliant already. Lisa is so creative - we're lucky to have her skills here in the village - the work she does with shops in the area really elevates the local aesthetic. Thank you Lisa!

Paul and Bobby Wilson from PWM Electrics have also been great to work with. Their high standard of work has really improved the space and they are always accommodating and community-minded. They fitted us in despite their busy schedule and helped us get it all done on-time.

Of course none of it would have been possible had Freight Design not been open to the idea of letting us lease the building. It is such a great space and we are delighted we were able to make it work. We will soon also have our signage courtesy of Freight Design which we're exited about. Thanks Dav and Laurel.

The help of Katie and Marcello from CHG Architecture was key to getting us through the initial planning stages. We are so grateful for all your input.

Bright Signals based in Glasgow did a brilliant job of our branding. They are always easy to work with and full of inspiring ideas. We love our Granny Mutch look and how it works with our other projects.

Jamie McNamara we're really grateful for the building survey you did for us. It was a crucial time and we appreciated your long trip back to the village to help out.

Martin from Complete Fire & Security, based in Houston was also great. Thanks for fitting us in at what has been a particularly hectic time for you.

There is still a second stage of development to come and we are looking forward to hopefully getting started on building the kitchen and the social space in the courtyard before too long. But for now, we're really happy to have the retail space up and running. Thanks to all those who helped us get it this far. We think it is already a social hub as well as useful retail outlet which is exactly what we wanted.

Well, we have had a tremendous first day and we are totally blown away by the support. We knew the village were buzzing for a new charity shop but we didn’t dare dream of the kind of turnout we saw today. Here are some pics of the highlights. A thoroughly successful day. Thanks to all who came, who bought and who volunteered. ☺️🙏🏼❤️

See you again tomorrow.

We are now open again for donations! In particular we could use good bric-a-brac and household items, unused toiletries, toys and kids summer clothes, shoes, bags and accessories. ☺️
