Lewisham Local

Lewisham Local Bringing Lewisham together through giving and sharing. ✨ The Lewisham Local ‘Community Contributor Card is an initiative of Rushey Green Time Bank.

The scheme is designed to recognise the invaluable contribution volunteers and community activists make towards improving our communities. It covers whatever kind of help people do – whether it is traditional volunteering, time banking, befriending, and grassroots localism initiatives, anything where
neighbours do something for the benefit of each other and the wider community. Plus, it is about s

trengthening the local economy by encouraging more people to shop at Lewisham’s amazing independent shops and businesses. Traders throughout Lewisham are signing up to the scheme to offer favourable deals to cardholders, visibly demonstrating they are community contributors! It’s all about enabling local communities thrive. How it works: the scheme is free to join for both community organisations and traders! The card is totally free. We work with recognised community organisations in Lewisham, who wish to further acknowledge the efforts of their time givers. Traders are offering their favourable deals based purely on generous goodwill. Once they agree to join the scheme a window sticker is displayed in a prominent position, advertising they accept the card. Their offer is promoted on our Lewisham Local website and through our community networks.

Good Food Lewisham’s Quarterly Network Meeting came to the newly restored Catford House and the conversation was all about food co-ops. 🌿

Good Food Lewisham

A packed room, shared seeds, and people genuinely excited about changing how Lewisham eats.

This is what a food network looks like. 💚

Shiri from Cooperation Town Cooperation Town broke down how food co-ops work; democratic, not-for-profit, and cutting household grocery costs by up to 40%.

Meanwhile, Ella from Lewisham Fruit Harvest spoke about their new initiative: harvesting and redistributing fruit from trees growing right across our borough.

That map? Every dot is a public fruit tree in London.

There’s more growing in this city than we realise. 🍎

The Lewisham Fruit Harvest connects tree owners, volunteer pickers, food banks, and schools, redirecting fruit that would otherwise go to waste.

Want to get involved as a picker, tree owner, or recipient of the Lewisham Fruit Harvest, or interested in starting a food co-op in Lewisham?

Our Windrush celebration didn’t fall on the day itself, but it landed exactly when it needed to. 💛

On 1st July, our Time Bank community gathered to honour Windrush Day.

Choir performances, poetry, an interactive exhibition, and a spread of food that spoke for itself: some catered, some brought in by neighbours to share.

That’s how these gatherings should feel.

We were joined by Africa Advocacy Foundation who offered free blood pressure checks throughout the day, and the whole thing ran on the shoulders of our brilliant Friday volunteers and a wonderful crew of young volunteers who showed up.

Windrush is a legacy of arrival, community, and holding each other up across generations.

That’s what 1st July looked like in real life. 💚

Want to be part of Time Bank? Head to our bio. ☝️

It's set to be a hot one, Lewisham. ☀️

An Amber Heat-Health Alert is in place across London from Thursday until at least Tuesday, and the warm weather looks likely to stay with us for much of next week.

Swipe through for UKHSA's simple guide to staying well in the heat. ➡️

Hot weather is lovely, but it can be genuinely hard on the body, especially for older people, very young children, and anyone managing a health condition.

A few simple things make a real difference:

🏠 Keep your home cool: Close curtains and blinds on windows in direct sun, and open up when the air feels cooler outside than in

😎 Stay out of the sun when it's strongest, 11am–3pm

💧 Drink plenty: Aim for 6 to 8 glasses of fluid a day (around 1,600ml for women, 2,000ml for men); water, squash and non-caffeinated tea all count

❤️ Check in on neighbours, friends or family who might find the heat harder to manage

Also, staying hydrated needn't mean buying bottled water.

With Refill Lewisham, you can top up your bottle for free at refill stations across the borough; just look for the sticker in the window (swipe to the last slide to see exactly what it looks like) or find your nearest station using the Refill link in our bio. 🔗 🚰

Every park in Lewisham has a water point too.

Need somewhere cool to pause while you're out?

The GLA Map of Cool Spaces shows free, cool places to rest right across London; also linked in our bio. 🔗

Let's look out for one another this week. 💙

Today is World Sickle Cell Day. 🩸
In a borough like ours, that matters. 🧡

Sickle cell is the UK’s most common inherited blood condition, and it disproportionately affects African and Caribbean heritage communities; communities that are central to Lewisham’s story.

For families living with it, sickle cell can mean pain crises, hospital visits, and a daily resilience that often goes unseen.

That’s where our community can do more. 📌

When churches, youth clubs, food projects, and faith groups talk about sickle cell; when our networks share accurate information, signpost services, and ask how they can better support people living with the condition, awareness becomes action.

So today, two asks from us:
🔹If you run a community group, faith space, or local service; think about how you could better support people living with sickle cell...even a conversation helps.

🔹If you want to learn more, visit Sickle Cell Society or NHS London and look out for more info from our community partners.

Together, we look out for each other.
That’s Lewisham. 💚

Pride Month is here, and this year, we’ve got something to share. 🌈

We’re launching a new LGBTQ+ infrastructure support project at Lewisham Local: a piece of work shaped by months of conversations with local groups, built around what support is genuinely needed on the ground.
..because Pride is about more than a flag in June.

It’s about whether the people doing this work the rest of the year; the collectives, the spaces, the support networks; have what they need to keep going.

That’s where we want to add value: practical, inclusive, community led. 💚

📩 Full details in our June newsletter; link in bio.
