Thieves Again! 3rd TIME🤬🤬🤬🤬

If bad language offends you, please don’t watch as I know I swore

Like all beekeepers I work hard to keep my equipment in good condition and to ensure I have enough frames, foundation and hive parts for whatever I need throughout the season.

I but decent parts from Thornes whom I have always used, and store them in my lockup ready for when I need a super etc.

This is the 3rd time in 3 years or so that it has been broken into and new equipment stolen.

This time the thief took about 500 National frames and foundation, several Thornes flat packed supers and brood boxes all cedar!

What is most disappointing, is that the only people who would know where my lockup is, are beekeepers that have been to the lockup with me, all of whom I would have considered friends, over the years.

If someone offers you a load of cheap national frames, or foundation,both super or brood, or Thornes cedar boxes, still flat packed, again both super and brood, do let me know as I’m really rather tired of this.

Most beekeepers are lovely people, but somewhere close there is a thieving git!

There is something fascinating about a swarm putting itself away into a nuc box.

I love watching them stream in from the cluster after the first few bees find the entrance.

I always find it so much easier than shaking the bees into the nuc.

Watch them streaming in.

Perfect Example Of A Supercedure Cell!

Sometimes a honey bee colony, knows something about the queen that we as beekeepers don’t , and they will begin the process of superseding the queen.

This means that the bees will raise one or two cells in the centre of the frame, as shown in the video. When the new queen hatches , the colony will wait until she is mated, let her lay alongside her mother for a few days, and then once the know the daughter is laying well, they will dispatch of the mother, the old queen, leaving just the daughter reigning supreme!

This is an absolutely perfect example of a supercedure cell.

So that’s where they went!

Had one of those instance’s recently where I collected a swarm, got it in the box and took it home, only to find that the next morning they had left.
They left even with the queen excluder in position on the nuc entrance. I figured she could get through as she had slimed down to be able to fly.

Anyway, one of my neighbours pointed out they have had some bees move in.

I of course denied any culpability.

Going to be difficult to remove these girls as they are in the wall space between the bricks.

Neighbour is not bothered now she realises they are not interested in her or her family when they go in and out.

Could be the swarm that left, on the other hand might not be.

Bit of a coincidence though.😂🐝

Swarm Collection!

There is something incredibly fascinating about watching the Bess put themselves away into a nuc box.

Makes collecting a swarm a breeze when they do this.

Once the first few bees discover the entrance they will fan releasing a pheromone that tells all the other bees in the cluster, that this is where we are moving to.

As the message filters down, they all start trooping into the box.

Now safely in a new hive.

Under Decking Cutout!

Yesterday, myself and Karin headed down to SE16 to do the first cutout of the year!

The bees had been there for 3 years, and were accessing via the balcony drainage outlet, as can be seen in the second picture.

However the residents now have a toddler and thought it best to have them removed safely.

The colony swarmed last year, but turned out to be quite a sizeable colony.

Inspection of the brood combs revealed no signs of either EFB or AFB, thankfully.

We did find some mites and the odd wax moth, however as they have been there for 3 years, and show no signs of varroa related brood issues, the colony shows some mite resistant traits.

There was quite a lot of honey stores, some which went with the colony, as we cut out the combs and inserted them into frames using elastic bands to hold the combs in place.

The residents are enjoying some of that honey comb.

Once all the comb was removed and the bees all vacuumed into the bee vac, the area was washed down with a strong smelling disinfectant!
Not to kill germs, but to remove the scent of the colony as much as possible. We are coming up to swarm season and another colony may well have taken up residence in due course.

It took about 4 hours to complete, but it was fun spending the afternoon giggling with my friend

We didn’t find the queen which is always a bit disappointing, but it is quite possible we missed her and she was hoovered up with the rest of the ladies.

Either way it will be easy to tell, as we took the brood combs away, inserted into frames. There was lots of eggs and young larvae, so an inspection in a week or so will reveal whether she is there or not, because if she is not there, then we will find queen cells, as some of the brood is young enough to facilitate this.

Massive Piano Graveyard In Kent!

Down amongst the rolling country side of Kent, beautiful countryside wherever you look, you will find this!

If you’ve ever wondered where pianos go when nobody loves them anymore, it’s here!

Just a 150 meters or so from our Keston Apiary.

There are stand up, grand and even player pianos on the piano graveyard.

So much history here, if only pianos could talk.

On the other side of the coin, I better stay on top of the bees!
Don’t want a swarm taking up residence somewhere in the middle of that lot.🐝😂
