Phil explores how Dahl’s work was brought to life by his collaboration with Quentin Blake and where their indelible connection first started. We’re in Abu Dhabi for the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair! The fair opens tomorrow and runs until 18 September. Our selection brings together works that document the history of the Islamic and Arab world across seven centuries, including this miniature Qur’an published by David Bryce in 1896.

Miniature Qur’ans like this one were carried as amulets by Muslim soldiers and bought by pilgrims in Mecca.

Our World at War catalogue is live on our website today! It explores the artifacts and legacy of the period between 1914 and 1945, a violent and tumultuous time that uniquely shaped the modern world. The catalogue includes 150 items that help tell this story: art and literature depicting the horrors of the wars and the transformations they provoked, propaganda, and works by and about the titans of the time.

The latter includes this presentation copy of Harry Truman’s ‘Memoirs’, inscribed to Anthony Eden, Britain’s wartime foreign secretary and eventual prime minister. Check out the full catalogue on our website.

We recently had the thrilling opportunity to bring together two copies of the Mirabilia Romae: a 500-year-old guidebook to the city of Rome and one of the earliest of its kind. There are only 13 known copies of this edition in institutional libraries around the world, and a handful in private hands.

As New York, London, Paris, and Milan prepare to be taken over by fashion this month, we’re looking at some of the stylish items on our shelves.

David Bailey’s Box of Pin-Ups is a collection of portraits depicting the fashion icons of the Swinging Sixties in London. Subjects include A-listers like The Beatles and The Rolling Stones, as well as film stars, gangsters, and couturiers. Each image is accompanied with a note by Francis Wyndham, then-editor of Queen magazine.

The US Open is the talk of the town in New York! This two-week tennis tournament is one of the largest in the world, attracting thousands of spectators and some of the biggest talents in tennis.

This silver trophy is from a very different tennis match: the 1902 Shanghai Recreation Club tournament. It was crafted by one of the foremost silversmiths in Shanghai at the turn of the 20th century, characterized by their intricate engraving and use of dragons.

On This Day in 1957, Jack Kerouac’s On The Road was published. As Kerouac was writing, he grew frustrated by the disruption caused by changing the paper in his typewriter. Instead, he taped together sheets from a roll of teletype paper, which allowed him to type without pause. The resulting scroll is considered one of the great relics of literary history.

Pictured here is likely the first ever reproduction of the scroll, given to publisher Robert Giroux. Giroux was the first person to receive the manuscript of On The Road—and the first person to reject it.
