Access to Work waiting times have reached up to 37 weeks.

For disabled workers, this is not just a delay. It can mean waiting months for specialist equipment, travel support, communication support, workplace adjustments or support workers that make work possible.

Around 66,000 applications were waiting to be processed in March 2026, and Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee has warned that the backlog is creating hardship and uncertainty for disabled people.

If you are waiting, you are not alone.

Our guide explains what Access to Work can help with, why the delays are happening, what to do while waiting, and what employers should do now.

From full-time work to nothing - the sudden reality of living with a chronic illness or disability leaves so many people asking: how am I supposed to pay for all of this?

The extra costs don't stop at medical supplies. Everyday changes, like needing to keep the heating on higher to manage joint pain from conditions like psoriatic arthritis, create an intense financial burden.

Will SEND reforms make school support harder to get?

Navigating school support can feel like an uphill battle for families of autistic children or children with ADHD. With new government SEND reforms on the horizon, many parents are understandably anxious about what these changes mean for their child's education.

The government states that the core aim of these proposals is earlier, fairer support through Individual Support Plans, National Inclusion Standards, and increased specialist help for schools. However, a plan on paper simply is not enough; families need clear, funded, and legally enforceable support.

There are widespread concerns that Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs) - which carry vital legal duties - could become much harder to access in the future. This particularly worries parents of children who mask their struggles at school only to collapse from sensory overload or emotional exhaustion once they get home.

The important thing to remember right now is that current SEND law has not changed yet. You can absolutely still ask for SEN support, reasonable adjustments, or an EHC needs assessment under existing legal protections.

While our educational resource articles and policy guides are always 100% free for anyone to use, our paid membership options start at £1 a month.

Joining Purpl today grants you access to hundreds of exclusive discounts, our member prize draws, a safe community group to connect with other parents, and our quarterly grant fund to help offset extra disability costs.

Will SEND reforms help families, or make school support harder to get?

For parents of disabled children, autistic children, children with ADHD, and children with additional needs, this is a huge question.

The government says the reforms are about earlier, fairer support in schools. But many families and campaigners are worried about what this could mean for EHCPs, legal protections and children who already struggle to get the help they need.

Current SEND law has not changed yet, but parents deserve clear, calm information about what is being proposed and what they can still do now.

We’ve broken it down in plain English.

Waiting for an autism or ADHD assessment? You are not alone.

UK waiting lists are not just queues - they represent months or years of trying to cope with overwhelm, burnout, and executive dysfunction without formal support.

But here is what many people do not realise: support can start before a formal diagnosis.

Under the Equality Act, schools, universities, and employers should evaluate what you actually need to survive and thrive, rather than just waiting for official paperwork. Small adjustments like flexible hours, written instructions, extra time, or access to quiet spaces can make an immediate difference to your daily routine.

If you are navigating the system in England, pathways like Right to Choose can help speed up the process, though managing ADHD medication or shared care agreements down the line can get complicated.

The neurodivergent assessment wait is more than just a queue

Stuck on a UK waiting list for an autism or ADHD assessment? You already know that wait time means months or years of trying to cope alone.

But you do not have to wait for a formal piece of paper to get help. Legally, UK schools, universities, and employers should evaluate what you need to manage sensory overload, executive dysfunction, or burnout right now. Simple changes like quiet spaces, flexible hours, or clear written instructions can change everything.

Are you or your child currently waiting for a diagnosis? What small adjustments have helped you cope in the meantime? Share your thoughts below.

The text explains that the wait can mean months or years of trying to cope without the right support, ending with the direct community conversation starter question: "Are you or your child waiting for a diagnosis?"

Waiting for an autism or ADHD assessment can feel like being stuck in limbo.

For some people, it is months. For others, it can be years. And while you wait, life does not pause. School still happens. Work still expects you to cope. University deadlines keep coming. Family life carries on.

The important thing to know is this: you may be able to ask for support before you have a formal diagnosis.

That could mean SEN support at school, reasonable adjustments at work, disability support at university, Access to Work, DSA planning, or practical changes that make daily life easier.

I’ve put together a full Purpl guide covering autism and ADHD waiting lists, Right to Choose, shared care warnings, DSA support and what you can do while you wait.
