It is Disabled Students' Allowance Info Week. Sorting out your study support is a vital first step, but many disabled students find their budgets stretched thin by everyday living expenses. "As a disabled student, I have to be super careful with budgeting. Being able to save 10% on my Morrisons shop has been a huge help, and has allowed me to keep buying the healthier options that benefit my wellbeing."

Our flexible membership options:
£1 a month, paid as a £12 annual payment

Blue Badges & Non-Visible Disabilities: What You Need to Know

"Access needs aren’t always visible, and they certainly don’t always fit into a PIP tick box."

If you or a loved one are struggling with travel due to a permanent health condition or disability, please know that you do not need to be receiving PIP to qualify for a Blue Badge. If you apply through your local council's Further Assessment route, they will review your specific situation. This route is fully open to those managing non-visible conditions like severe anxiety, dementia, or autism, particularly if travelling causes overwhelming distress or safety risks.

We know how exhausting it can be to fight for the support you're entitled to. That's why Purpl is here to take the stress out of the financial side of things by gathering the best disability discounts all in one place.

Before you book or shop for your next trip, check out our member benefits, see website link in profile.

Let’s bust a major Blue Badge myth

Too many people in our community miss out on a Blue Badge because they assume it’s only for physical wheelchair users.

The reality? Non-visible disabilities matter too.

If you live with a condition like autism, severe anxiety, or dementia, and journeys cause you overwhelming psychological distress, you have a right to apply through your local council.

We’ve mapped out the essential checklist right here in this graphic:
Who qualifies: Those with non-visible conditions or severe difficulty planning and following a journey.
How to apply: Online via GOV.UK or your local council website.
What evidence you need: Identity proof, recent digital photo, and supporting diagnosis or professional letters.

Our top Purpl Tip: When applying, don't just list your diagnosis. Describe what actually happens on a real journey. Explain the exact distress, risk, or safety reasons that make the trip difficult to manage.

Have you successfully claimed a Blue Badge for a non-visible condition? Share your advice in the comments to help someone else navigating the process today!

Disabled Students’ Allowance explained

Heading to university or college with a disability, long-term health condition, or specific learning difficulty? You could be entitled to extra funding that you do not have to pay back.

Did you know that the rules for your Disabled Students’ Allowance entirely depend on your home region?

Navigating these differences while trying to get a degree is a massive admin burden.

We want to hear from our student community on this. Did your funding process go smoothly, or did you run into regional hiccups while trying to get your specialist equipment sorted?

If you live with a disability or long-term health condition, navigating financial support can feel like a full-time job.

Most disabled students are aware of DSA for academic adjustments like British Sign Language interpreters or specialist laptops. Fewer realise they may also be eligible for PIP to assist with daily living and mobility costs outside of their studies.

Claiming one does not cancel out the other. They are completely separate systems designed for completely different goals.

But as any disabled student knows, the extra costs do not stop at textbooks. The hidden expenses of moving into halls, managing daily essentials, and maintaining your health add up quickly.

Our community was founded by a disabled person who understands exactly how expensive this "missing middle" truly is. Purpl exists to offset those costs with exclusive discounts on the brands you actually use.

What has been your experience trying to balance DSA or PIP applications with university life? Let us know in the replies.

Join Purpl and access our member savings, a community and a grant fund - all for just £1 a month.

Are you navigating university or college with a disability or long-term health condition? Let's clear up a major piece of misinformation.

A lot of students assume that claiming Personal Independence Payment means they are automatically barred from receiving Disabled Students’ Allowance. It is completely untrue. PIP and DSA are entirely separate. PIP helps with your daily living costs, and DSA focuses on making your education accessible, covering your study-specific equipment, software, or non-medical support.

Did you know these systems were completely independent, or have you already applied for both? Let us know your experiences or drop your questions below so our community can support each other.

P.S. Looking for more ways to manage the steep extra costs of being a disabled student? Our online handbook and advice articles are always completely free to read. But if you want to start aggressively beating the disability price tag on your everyday student expenses, our paid membership options start at just £1 a month (billed annually) or £2 a month (cancel anytime).

How to get a disabled bus pass

A disabled person’s bus pass gives you free off-peak travel on local buses, helping to ease everyday transportation costs.

You can qualify under several categories, including severe walking difficulties, sensory impairments, learning disabilities, or if you have been refused a driving licence on medical grounds. Applications are processed online via GOV.UK through your local council. You will just need your identity documents, a recent photo, and your official medical evidence.

When applying, remember our main tip: explain your real day-to-day travel difficulties rather than just listing your diagnosis. The assessment teams need to see exactly how your condition impacts your ability to use public transport.

Can you get a free bus pass if you’re disabled?

The answer is: possibly, but it depends on where you live, your condition and what evidence your council asks for.

A few things people often miss:

- You may need to apply through your local council
- Some councils accept PIP if you scored 8 points or more for Moving Around or Communicating Verbally
- In England, the standard free travel times are usually 09:30 to 23:00 on weekdays
Rules can be different in Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and London

Travel costs add up quickly, so it’s worth checking what support and discounts you can get.

New Universal Credit rules explained

The health component of Universal Credit changed on 6 April 2026. The LCWRA element now has two separate rates instead of one.

If you were already receiving LCWRA before this date, the lower rate should not affect you. However, many new claimants will now receive the lower rate of £217.26 per month unless they meet specific criteria for the higher rate of £429.80.

To secure the higher rate, the DWP will look at whether your condition is lifelong, severe, and not expected to improve. When applying, it is vital to explain your function rather than just your diagnosis. Make sure to detail the impact of pain, fatigue, risk, distress, and required recovery time.

Have you had to navigate these new changes yet? Let us know your experience or ask questions in the comments section below.
