Irving Penn: Elevating Debrit to High Art

In the early 1970s, Irving Penn began collecting discarded cigarette butts from the street and photographing them in his studio. Whether grouped, paired, or shown individually, Penn positioned each cigarette against a plain background, creating close-up studies of their varied forms. His photographs transform these discarded remnants of consumer culture into symbolic representations of contemporary society.

The Ci******es series was made using the Platinum Palladium process, an expensive technique that produces a nuanced tonal range and requires considerable technical skill. Although Penn had previously printed works using the platinum process, this series represents his first conscious engagement with the technique as an aesthetic choice.

Spotlight: Zhang Kechun's 'The Yellow River'

Inspired by the novel ‘River of the North’ by Chengzhi Zhang, Kechun set out to document the effects of modernisation along the third longest river in Asia, the Yellow River (Huang He). The river is considered the cradle of Chinese civilisation, yet it is also a source of danger, capable of breaking its banks at any time. The areas surrounding the river have been devastated by flooding in recent years and Kechun’s photographs capture the emotional impact of this on the local population with an eerily quiet atmosphere.

"The interior is like a portrait of someone’s mind. You’re not just in a building, you’re in someones existence. You’re seeing their whole life, as if it’s been turned inside out into a space. It’s deeply narrative, on so many levels."

Exploring places like Cuba, Russia, the American South and the High Plains, Andrew Moore gravitates towards locations where layers of history converge and intertwine. His images reveal a captivating beauty in both grandeur and decay.

Nature whispers what the world too often ignores.

Olaf Otto Becker has spent over a decade travelling across the western coast of Greenland. His series Broken Line and Ilulissat document the effects of global warming on the coastal landscape, icebergs and glaciers that form on and around the island. Using a large format camera, Becker explores the relationship between the fragile arctic landscapes and the people who live and work there.

Beaton's nod to surrealism 👁️

Cecil Beaton masterfully captured the eccentricity and creative vitality of British cultural life in the 1920s. His portraits became renowned for their theatrical use of props and mirrors, as well as their sophisticated engagement with both art history and the emerging language of surrealism explored by artists such as André Breton, Salvador Dalí, and René Magritte.
