š„ Soy-Free Eggs š„
Next week weāll have our first soy-free eggs available from the vending machine!
Weāre currently trialling a soy-free feed with one of our flocks, and weāre excited to share the eggs with you.
Why go soy-free?
š¾ Allergens
Some people who have a soy allergy report that they are less sensitive to eggs from hens fed a soy-free diet than eggs from conventionally fed hens.
š Healthy fats
A henās diet influences the nutrients found in the eggs she lays. Reducing soybean meal and using alternative protein sources can alter the eggās fatty acid profile, helping shape the balance of naturally occurring polyunsaturated fats in the yolk.
š Considering the environment
Soy production in some parts of the world has been linked to deforestation and habitat loss. By reducing our reliance on imported soybean meal and using alternative protein sources, weāre taking a small step towards a more sustainable feeding system.
What makes the feed different?
Our soy-free feed contains around 15% protein, compared with approximately 18% in our conventional layer feed. Although the protein level is slightly lower, the diet is carefully balanced to provide everything our hens need to stay healthy and continue producing nutritious, high-quality eggs.
Instead of soybean meal, the protein comes from sunflower meal, rapeseed meal and beans.
Why havenāt we done this before?
Quite simplyācost.
Soy-free feed costs around 50ā60% more than our conventional layer feed. As a result, the soy-free eggs will be around 20% more expensive than our standard eggs at Ā£12 per tray.
Weāre interested to see what you think of them and how much demand there is for a soy-free option. If you give them a try, weād love to hear your feedback!
