Jahanara Begum (60) became widowed when her husband died of a stroke three years ago. Since then she has been relying on begging on the street for money. She has two daughters, of which the eldest had been married off whilst Jahanara’s husband was still alive. The younger daughter has recently been married off, with the assistance of neighbors in the absence of her husband. After one year of marriage, the husband of younger daughter demanded money from Jahanara so he could go abroad. Jahanara couldn’t afford to give any money and as a result the husband kicked his wife out, despite her also being pregnant. Since then Jahanara’s youngest daughter has divorced her husband. Jahanara has continued to beg from people to support her daughter and her newborn grandchild. They are living in extreme poverty. The house Jahanara lives in with her newborn granddaughter is in a very bad state. When it rains, water seeps into the house, as the roof’s tin has lots of holes. Moreover, there is no safety from the cold, as the wind creeps into the house in the cold nights. Living in such a condition is very dangerous for the baby.

Building a new house for the widow Jahanara Begum would be a safe haven for her, for the divorced daughter and her newborn child.
