AQUAMARINE ORIGIN

Aquamarine is the light blue to the deep dark blue and greenish-blue variety of beryl mineral group. The name aquamarine comes from the Latin “aqua” meaning “water” and “marina” meaning “of the sea”, as the colour of this beautiful gemstone reminds calm sea waters lapping the white sandy island shores.

Aquamarine has been used as jewellery for at least 3000 years with references in Roman, Greek, Egyptian and Sumerian writings. However, at that time, the gemstone was called “sea-green beryl”. The earliest known use of “aquamarine” in connection with the gem was in Anselmus de Boodt’s gemological work, Gemmarum et Lapidum Historia (History of Gems and Stones), published in 1609.

Aquamarine is found worldwide, with the largest deposits in Minas Gerais mines of Brazil. Other aquamarine deposits are located in Pakistan, Kenya, Zambia, Nigeria, Madagascar, Mozambique, China, Myanmar, Russia, Ukraine and the United States.

What’s The Difference Between Cultivated (Lab grown) Diamonds And Natural Diamonds?
Both mined and cultivated diamonds are made of pure carbon that is transformed into sparkling crystalline stones. Their foundation gives cultivated diamonds the same chemical and optical properties as natural diamonds.

The High Pressure High Temperature method mimics the conditions of natural diamond creation by placing seeds in a large mechanical press and applying extreme pressure and high temperature to the carbon that is present. The seed acts as a guide for the lattice of carbon (that will soon become the diamond) to grow layer by layer within a matter of weeks until the desired carat weight is achieved.

Due to the process, cultivated and mined diamonds come in the same range of shapes, cuts, polishes, symmetries, colours and clarities. They are finished using the same techniques, test as diamonds and are diamonds. The benefits of cultivated diamonds are that you can achieve a higher specification (carat weight, colour and clarity) for a budget.

Do not get confused between Cultivated (Lab grown) and simulated diamonds!!
Unlike lab-grown diamonds, simulated diamonds are not diamonds. While they have a similar appearance to diamonds, simulants are made from seed materials like glass or cubic zirconia. This fact makes diamond simulants like moissanite lack the hardness and optical properties of lab-grown diamonds. As time goes on, simulants become much more susceptible to wear-and-tear and diminished sparkle.

In antique jewelry, it was common for a gypsy setting to have a star shape surrounding the gemstone. The star was formed with a graver (a commonly used jeweler's tool). This tool pushed the metal around the stone to form prongs. Dealers and collectors alternatively refer to this style as a star setting and less frequently as a graver setting. Some of the prongs or metalwork in this type of antique setting can look crude.⁠

The star technique was not used for all antique gypsy settings. On occasion, the metal would completely surround the stone to hold it in place (pictured)—without any shape around it. This loss of the star shape evolved into the modern-day gypsy setting.⁠

Even with its shifts in design over time, the gemstone still appears to sit flush with the surface of the metal. This remains a constant feature of gypsy settings. Rings made with modern gypsy settings have the stone sunk into the metal. Jewelers most often call this a flush-mount setting, and they appear more sleek and contemporary compared to antique gypsy mountings.⁠
