Behind the Hope Collection

Before these pieces reached our shelves, they began here, in studios across the country, in the hands of the makers who dreamed them up. Clay wedged and thrown and slab-built, glazes mixed and tested, an idea slowly becoming an object.

There's something about seeing where the work is made that makes each piece mean more. A glimpse into a few of the studios behind the collection, all responding to the same single word: hope.

Next in our Hope Collection makers, Studio ERS and "After Matisse".

For Studio ERS, art is hope. As Emily puts it, it has always existed, and always will. No matter how bad the news, looking at art is a reminder that good things are possible too. This collection was inspired by one of her favourite artists, Matisse, and his cut-outs, so many of them made later in life, from his bed or wheelchair. Despite that frailty they're vibrant and full of energy, endlessly inspiring. These pieces are made to be picked up and moved around, a reminder to engage with art as often as you can.

Slab-built in stoneware clay. The collection includes the Matisse Sundial, a larger piece on an oak base finished with organic h**p seed oil and turned by Jim Patrick of Wood Carving London, alongside smaller fronds.

Why hope, and why now.

When we set the brief for this collection, I kept coming back to the same feeling. In a world that feels increasingly uncertain, I find myself needing to hope in a way I haven't before. Finding it through craft, through the hand of the maker, and through supporting a charity that brings communities together, feels more important than ever.

So we gave eleven of our makers a single word, and complete freedom. What they made of it has moved me more than I expected. A field of hollyhocks reaching for the light. Birds for the freedom they hold. Pieces drawn with a child's uninhibited hand. Each one a small, hopeful thing.

20% of every sale throughout September goes to Hope Unlimited Charitable Trust, who fund grassroots work to tackle hatred, bring different communities together, and build resilience through education and community cohesion. In a time of such divisive rhetoric, supporting work that challenges hate and helps build a more inclusive society feels like exactly where we want to put our small contribution. I hope it offers a little hope to others too.

HoodMor, and their "Mother's Hands".

For HoodMor, their children are a daily reminder of hope, in the happiness they bring and the excitement they feel for the future. For this collection they moved away from their signature black-and-white palette and precise linework, and embraced the uninhibited approach of their kids instead. Working directly with their hands, using brushes and crayons, letting a looser, more instinctive style emerge.

Hand-built pieces fired to stoneware, decorated with wax crayons, underglazes and glazes. Alongside their familiar faces and linework, they've introduced stars and moons, shapes from their children's worlds that recall quieter moments at bedtime. Drawn loosely and without much deliberation, they hold the same wonder children carry with them every day, the quiet, hopeful kind that started this collection in the first place.

Next in our Hope Collection makers, Liz Vidal and her "Hope is the thing with feathers".

Liz named her Hope series after the birds she loves to watch soar, for the freedom, movement and possibility they hold. As she puts it, her Hope series is a homage to these amazing creatures and the quiet joy they bring. The title borrows from the Emily Dickinson poem, where hope is the thing with feathers that perches in the soul and never stops singing.

Lidded trinket pots, each topped with a sculpted bird for a handle, in stoneware decorated with glaze and oxides. The lid makes each one a small private space, somewhere to keep the things worth keeping close.

September is here, and so is the Hope Collection.

First to share is Sophie Alda, who gathered nine hollyhock vases into a field of hope. Sophie chose the hollyhock for being the flower that grows the tallest, reaching higher than all the rest. Bold, hand-painted and joyful, a whole meadow of them standing together.

Something we've been working on for a long time is almost here.

The Hope Collection.

To mark our second year in Hampstead, we invited eleven of our makers to respond to a single brief: Hope. What each of them made of it was entirely their own, and the results have been worth every bit of the wait.

A ceramics exhibition in collaboration with and 20% of every sale before the end of September going to Hope Unlimited Charitable Trust.

The rain has come (at last!), and with it we look to the autumn.

I wore jeans last week for the first time in months, and packed a jumper for the weekend. There's something about this time of year, back to school or not, that makes you want to reset. Sharpen the pencils, light the candle, start again.

It's International Dog Day, so here's Mags. A firm Fodder fave.

The best dog we could have asked for, and the best advert we know for two things: Staffies, who are so often misjudged and so rarely deserve it, and adopting.

We rehomed Mags through Dogs Trust, and we'd choose that route every single time. There are so many lovely dogs waiting for a home right now, all of them with as much to give as this one. If you've got the room in your life, it's worth a look.
