📘Is this the best example of a book cover made from the make-ready sheets produced during the printing process, repurposed as the dust jacket itself.

‘Printing Poetry: A Workbook in Typographic Reification’, designed and printed by Clifford Burke and published by Scarab Press, San Francisco, in 1980, is a example of form, process and subject matter coming together. The fact that Burke was both the designer and printer made the idea possible. The make-ready sheets generated during production become the covers, transforming what might otherwise be considered waste into an integral part of the book itself.
What makes the concept particularly clever is its relationship to the subject: a book about the act of printing that literally carries the evidence of its own production.

Rather than hiding the mechanics of printing, they are made visible. The sheets retain traces of the typographic and mechanical processes involved in producing the book, making the cover an extension of the printing process rather than simply a wrapper around it. And because the make-ready sheets differ, every dust jacket is unique.

A great example of how materiality, production and authorship can become part of the design itself — and how a constraint, or something normally discarded, can become the most interesting part of the object.
A book about printing, printed into its own cover. I love it!

THE INCOMER is in cinemas nationwide from today, and America from the 25th. 🎬

We worked on the identity titles and credits for this film, set on a remote Scottish island, where two siblings have lived alone for 30 years, until an unexpected ‘incomer’ arrives to change everything. It’s a great film and also made me laugh.

The title card typography is set in Poliphilus, the 1923 Monotype revival of the Renaissance Roman type cut by Francesco Griffo for Aldus Manutius’s 1499 book, Hypnerotomachia Poliphili. I have always loved this font for its roughness and letterpress vibes. We used the original Poliphilus directly from The Encyclopedia of Typefaces by Jaspert, Berry & Johnson - one of the great type references, and still in print at a reasonable price. Buy a copy. Keep it forever.

Here is a new initiative I am excited about… ‘Types of Typesetting’ is a series of short symposia that will take place in different countries over the coming year, exploring the practice of typesetting in depth: how it is currently performed, how it might be performed differently, and the creative possibilities that emerge during this complex typographic operational process.

The series aims to bring together practitioners in different parts of the world to present, share, and discuss their approaches to typesetting. While line endings shape the visual, rhythmic, and ideological character of text, approaches and experimentation within alignment remain largely untheorized. Methods are commonly transmitted as tacit professional knowledge, passed between designers and typesetters with minimal critical articulation. Rather than treating typesetting simply as a technical or functional process, ‘Types of Typesetting’ considers it as a creative and cultural practice shaped by history, typography, language, technology, context, and individual approaches to making.

The first symposium #1 will take place during the AGI Open in Reykjavík, Iceland, on 2 October (2 hours), with short presentations by myself (slide 2-6), Dafi Kühne (slide 7-10) and Studio Studio (slide 11-15) and a discussion between speakers and attendees, foregrounding contrasting positions on justification, alignment, and typographic ethics. If you are a practitioner, or an AGI member, who will be in Iceland at this time and would like to contribute, participate, or simply be part of the discussion, please get in touch. I am particularly interested in discussions on how language – and languages – are treated, such as multilingual typographic contexts where several coexist on the same page. Also interested in experimental and novel approaches that operate at the boundary between legibility and illegibility, and in questioning where, and how, that boundary might be drawn.

To mark the end of the exhibition ‘Daniel Buren – Pages in situ’ at Lisson Gallery, London, I will be giving an exhibition talk/tour at 2pm this Saturday 5 September. It’s the last time to see the work of over six decades of buren’s striped motif as seen in books, art works and ephemera. Free all welcome, no booking required. Lisson

Review of Buren exhibition by Peter Suchin in the latest Art Monthly No. 499 🔍

‘Pages in Situ’ contains over 100 of Buren’s publications, ranging from insertions in exhibition catalogues and books to several wall pieces, and an engaging video in which various books, art journals, catalogues, editions and ephemera are shown against a plain background, their pages discreetly turned by an actor’s hands. The page-turning is now and then paused to let the viewer see Buren’s contributions, the video having been recorded so that the 8.7cm stripes, printed at precisely that width on the page, are also 8.7cm on the screen. This Borgesian correspondence is an excellent means through which to visually convey a comprehensive sense of these items’ physical form.

Muggeridge has installed Buren’s publications within Perspex-covered, wall-mounted cabinets, which run along two fairly lengthy walls of the Lisson, forming a potential artwork in its own right. Many of the volumes are opened at Buren’s interventions, the overall effect being one of a long series of seductively coloured verticals; the occasional magazine cover, photograph, or isolated passage of text can be seen peeping out through the stripes. With some 95% of the material coming from the curator’s own archive, one can see both the vast scale of Buren’s printed output, and the studied dedication of the committed collector.

For the past 15 years we have been designing the invites for Focal Point Gallery Focal Point Gallery 🦜 We see the printed invitation announcements as part of the show, and the process couldn’t be further away from a templated e-invite that the majority of organisations produce. And we always try to make each announcement as different from the previous one so it’s a surprise when it lands on the doorstep and the envelope is opened. ✉️

Here is our latest, an essay in booklet form as the invitation for ‘Compulsory Continuous Connectedness: rest in a networked world’, a group show exploring the impact of networked media on our collective mental wellbeing. Led by a new commission and research from artists Romy Gad el Rab (𝔇𝔯 ℜ𝔬𝔪𝔶 𝔊𝔞𝔡 𝔢𝔩 ℜ𝔞𝔟 رومي) and Caroline Sinders (Caroline Sinders), the exhibition features work by Helen Cammock (Helen Cammock), Nina Davies (Nina Davies), Rebecca Moccia (), Salvatore Vitale (Salvatore Vitale) and Qualeasha Wood (Qualeasha).

Thanks to all at Focal Point as always for being onboard with risk, and to the artists for trusting the process… ❤️
