Who doesn't melt into a puddle of love at the sound of a cat's purr? Few things in life compare to the warm, fuzzy feeling we get when a feline companion snuggles up to us and purrs itself to sleep. But while that little engine tugs at our heartstrings, we must heed the words of the writer Robert Byrne: "To err is human, to purr is feline." Indeed, humans often err in believing that a purr is always a sign of contentment. Cats may purr when they are anxious, ill, injured, or close to death. Cats also purr when giving birth and nursing, probably as a means of bonding with their offspring. Other theories propose that purring has a self-healing and calming effect on cats - no kitty Prozac necessary.

Whatever "it" is, it's super fantastic!

"The cat's pajamas" is a nonsense phrase but there is some sense behind it....
In the 1920s the urban east-coast cities of the USA were a breeding ground for new and wacky modes of expression. The bright young things of the flapper era wanted to throw off anything old or stuffy in fashion, music and language. Many new, and for the most part nonsense, animal related expressions were coined to denote excellence. These included the snake's hips, the kipper's knickers, the monkey's eyebrows and so on. Of the many such phrases only the bee's knees and the cat's pajamas remain in regular use.
By the mid 1920s the US phrases the cat's eyebrows/pajamas had become well enough established to have travelled to the UK (The Daily Herald, May 1923).
The Cat's Pajamas was so fashionable a term as to be taken up as the name of many things in the 1920s - a dance, a stage show, a song, a film, even the name of a style of furry underwear.

Whereas dogs are usually referred to in breed speak, cats are referred to in myriad terms, including breed, colour, and pattern: "My cat is a Tabby". It's understandable why this might confuse some folks. Tabby is just one of several coat patterns, and there are several types of Tabbies. 😸😼😻
The Agouti Tabby, for example, has a combination of alternating light and dark color bands along each hair; the Mackerel Tabby has fishbone-patterned stripes; a Spotted Tabby sport dark spots along the sides of the body; the Classic Tabby coat consists of bull's-eye blotches and swirls. That's a lot of Tabbies to keep track of! 🐾🐾🐾
