The little spaces between building a guitar, when I am editing a full build film and catching my breath, are the moments I drift back to the bench for something different. Making things that sit adjacent to my industry lets me stretch without the weight of a full commission. My engagement felt like the perfect excuse to make something thoughtful and different.

This is a salt box, a simple easy access seasoning box for the kitchen, the heart of a home. A small thing, but I hope it flavours a lot of loving dinners to come and marks the start of a great chapter. The whole project is on my YouTube channel now for details on method.

The simple marquetry on the lid is inspired by the forms and colours of Uluru (where I was proposed to). I want to acknowledge that Uluru is a sacred place for the Anangu people, and this is only a quiet nod to the landscape rather than any attempt to represent their culture or stories. It is just my way of honouring a place that has moved me deeply.

So thrilled to have been invited to this week to exhibit some work and do a live demonstration and talk as a part of the Mark Knopfler auction event. Thanks to the team at Christie’s for the fantastic chance to showcase some and introduce Lutherie to a wider audience.

Happy new year everyone! Ending the year with this gorgeous piece of wood on my workbench all shiny.

While the new guitars settle with their strings on, I’ll be embarking on a really exciting adventure to ring in the new year and I can’t wait to share it with you. It involves having no access to the internet for about 3 weeks, and going abroad to one of the main places I get my tonewood from. Can’t wait to learn more about these materials and share with you the journey on here.

Happy 2024, and I wish everyone a wonderful New Years!

Like most people, I grew up listening to Mark Knopfler. So when asked me to exhibit my work alongside his guitar collection - which he is auctioning for charity in January - it was a big fat yes from me.

I’ll be doing so at the Christie’s Lates to celebration the auction and also demonstrating a bit of gentle guitarmaking for those who come along. It’s open to the public but apparently it will be rather busy so do register your interest using the form on the Christie’s website.

Swipe to see a ready-to-be-pinned-on bridge and the result of a day spent on minutae. Ironically I don’t need to finish sand it yet (because inevitably it’ll be needing a resurface in a few weeks after it hangs around the workshop waiting for the guitar to be sprayed with lacquer) but it’s nice to preview some of the shine I’ll expect on the final thing. Not to alarm (!) but that shine is purely from sandpaper which is still mental to me and makes me swear audibly whenever I see it.

The new workshop has a never ending to-do list. Bolting to floors, logistical rewiring, dust extraction Lego; all the things that I’m always amazed has to be in my wheelhouse, leaving my brain and body beat after a daily 8 hours of physical and mental imposter syndrome. At the moment I find guilt in leaving tasks undone in lieu of a quiet moment carving a waiting mahogany neck. There’s a balance of admin and art I can’t quite harmonise at the moment.

With all this and the London heat having shifted to fresher mornings and darker afternoons I’ve found there’s no energy for much else, including social media. I wanted to share instead something that I typically compile for my clients when their guitars are done; a hand bound, uniquely curated book of photos detailing the process of their new instrument coming to life.

I get them bound on cloth by who does a beautiful job. On a personal level, they’re a good way to reflect. Here are some photos of the books and from the books. I don’t believe I’ve shared them before, so maybe having space for scrabbling at old photos is actually a welcome change.

I moved into a new workshop at the beginning of June and have been squirrelling away since making it feel like home as well as working on some new commissions and finishing some past ones. Here is my first portrait in the new space for some upcoming PR about 🛠 🎸

I’ll be (and already have been) chronicling some of the new space on YouTube so check that out if you’re so inclined, link in bio.

The new space feels like a dream although of course I dearly miss everyone at :(
