Happy Lunar New Year!Wishing you good health, unbridled joy and prosperity in the Year of the Horse! 🐎. Chalcedony; with a concave mouth and shallow foot rim with broad edges, carved on front with a prancing horse tethered to a post, the details of saddle and bridle added in low relief, Official School.

1780-1850

‌The horse tethered to a post is suggests unrealised potential. It is thus perfectly suited as a gift to someone who has just passed the difficult Imperial examinations and qualified to become an official. Such gifts may have been made by the court and would have inspired pride and loyalty in the new official.

The final day of our s***fbottle advent calendar!

It has been such a pleasure posting one beautiful bottle for the past 24 days, they deserve to be shown off! We hope you have had a bit of joy from each one - from Susan and Scarlet (us in the last pic!).

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Glass of flattened rectangular form inside painted with Meng Haoren, the famous poet, on a donkey about to cross a bridge followed by a servant with a gourd sack and prunus blossom in a Snowy landscape.

S***fbottle Advent Calendar Day 23!

Glass; of faceted octagonal shape with a raised faceted panel on each side and a wide mouth, the body of pale lemon-yellow colour, attributed to the Imperial glassworks, Beijing. 1720-1760.

The faceted form is now very well established as being one of the staples of early Imperial glass production, inspired by European faceted watch cases.

This bottle is of the classic softly contoured shape of those with authentic reign-marks from the Yongzheng and Qianlong periods.

S***fbottle Advent Calendar Day 22!

Porcelain; enamelled with five scaly dragons chasing flaming pearls on an incised wave ground, Jingdezhen kilns. 1830-1850

Height: 5.1cm

‌The incised wave ground was created by coating the body in a white slip, which was then decorated with an iron tip. The technique was developed on porcelain during the fifteenth century and became particularly popular during the eighteenth century as a background for famille-rose enamel decoration, when it was developed by Tang Yin, the celebrated head of the Imperial kilns between 1728-1756. This stye is fairly rare on s***f bottles.

S***fbottle Advent Calendar Day 20!

It might be a s***fbottle it might be the grinch! A sight to catch your eye, twinkling by its beauty, oh how it shines. Beware your children or grandchildren don’t play with it too much - nice to look at, not to touch!

S***fbottle Advent Calendar Day 19!

The bottle looks as if it were carved from winter itself. Frosted crystal catches the light in pale shards, scattering it like snow at dawn. Inside, the icy cold snow spray waits—clear, sharp, and alive with chill. When released, it blooms into the air in a fine, crystalline mist, each particle biting with a clean, glacial cold.

Crystal; very well hollowed to reveal the natural ‘seaspray’ pattern within the material. 1750-1859.

Height: 6.3cm

S***fbottle Advent Calendar Day 18!

An extraordinary example of stone, delicately carved so that the natural markings within the material create the design. The imagery is intrinsic to the stone, ensuring that no two pieces could ever be the same.

Agate, minimally carved using the natural dark brown inclusions to reveal the silhouette of a bird standing under a tree. 1780-1850.

Height: 6.0cm

Provenance: The Ramfield Collection

S***fbottle Advent Calendar Day 17!

Today we’re celebrating the playful side of s***f bottles with this charming golden eggplant - rich in colour, full of character, and impossible not to smile at.

Copper and gold in the form of an eggplant; the calyx and one leaf in oxidised copper with gilt detail to make it look realistic; an almond shaped foot and the inner neck with a clockwise screw thread. Probably Imperial, attributed to the Palace Workshops, 1720-1800.
