Really looking forward to meeting musicians in at Stamford Strings in Stamford, Lincs, the charming Georgian town, where my Dad (and old John Betts) were born.

Written in Gladstone's typical convoluted manner (in fact one love letter contained a sentence consisting of 141 words with 18 clauses and subclasses), the towering 19th century politician and former Prime Minister displays his love and admiration for music; this, not the only occasion.

Unusual etching attributed to the French artist Jean Honore Fragonard, Paris (1732-1806).
Though no stranger to musical themes in his more typical painting (slide to see 'the music lesson), this appears to show severe mental disorder. Now in the National Library of Medicine, MD.

Mario Girardi studied with Gaetano Sgarabotto in Milan before establishing himself in Trieste in 1930.
His work owes more to his training in Milan than the influence of the Trieste school.
This instrument is a good model from his later period, the property of a musician.

Stradivari made the Medici Quintet for Grand Prince Ferdinando de Medici and brokered by Bartolomeo Ariberti.
After an initial commission of two violins and a Cello, two violas (Tenor and Contralto) were requested to complete the Quintet in 1690. Of these instruments, the Tenor Viola and Cello are still in Florence on display at the Accademia, along with a violin from 1716 'Medici, Tuscan', perhaps kadevas a replacement for one of the original violins.

By far the best preserved is the Tenor Viola shown here (with the Cello behind) which remarkably retails it's original neck, fingerboard, tailpiece, endpin and bridge!
The Medici crest is inlaid into the fingerboard whilst the tailpiece shows a cupid about to shoot an arrow with a floral motif below.

Alessandra Barabaschi has written an excellent two part essay on the Medici Quintet for Tarisio.
