In most Indian homes, there's a plant that gets its own dedicated home, not just a corner of the garden.

Tulsi. Holy basil. She's grown near the front of the house, not tucked away — considered sacred in Hindu tradition, associated with Vishnu and Lakshmi, and treated as a daily presence rather than an occasional one. Practically, she's just as valued: the leaves go into your morning chai, into home remedies for colds and coughs, and the plant itself is known to clear the air around it. Spiritual and useful, in the same breath — which is probably why she's survived in Indian households for generations, city or village.

That's the plant. Now the structure she's grown in.

In the north, it's a Vrindavan — a small raised, tiered structure, usually placed in the courtyard. Travel south and the name changes with the language: maadam in Tamil, katte in Kannada, thara in Malayalam, peetam in Telugu — different words, same idea.

There's a reason for the shape. Traditionally, this raised planter kept the plant safe from wandering animals, gave the roots proper drainage, and gave the house a fixed spot to return to each morning — to water the plant, light a diya, walk around it. Tulsi wasn't left in a pot in a corner. She was given a structure of her own, and a small daily ritual around it.

We wanted to bring that idea into homes here in UK— but built to actually last, and worth looking at twice.

Each of these is carved from premium marble, then hand-painted by artisans in Rajasthan — the kind of work passed down through families, done with a single fine brush, freehand, no stencils. The gold trim, the red dot-work along the edges, the little flower motif on each face — every piece takes hours, and every piece comes out just slightly different from the last. That's not a flaw. That's the hand behind it.

Hello Everyone,
Ravi here from
With Christmas around the corner, just the time to shed some light on the lovely papier mache art form of Kashmir.
These Christmas baubles are crafted in the Kashmir Valley in India using traditional papier-mâché techniques and painted by hand. Their vibrant colours, floral patterns, and delicate golden accents are created through a complex process that requires time, patience, and great skill.
Papier-mâché has a centuries-old tradition in Kashmir, preserved and passed down through families over many generations. It begins with recycled paper that is carefully prepared, pressed into moulds, and dried for several days before the painting even starts. Each ornament is then decorated by hand, layer by layer, and finally refined with gold accents and a multiple coats of laquer that lends to a lustrous and refined finish.
Making a single piece takes more than a week.
Today this craft is counted among the endangered traditions of the region. Artists work in small workshops or at home, often together with their families, and the number of artists practising this art form has dwindled, with many workshops having to close in recent years.
By choosing to add these to your christmas tree decor you will be doing your bith to consciously support the artisans of kashmir and honour a craft that is deeply rooted in the culture and history of the region.
Please do check out the entire range of curated designs on the website and let us know what you think in the comments below.

Featured here is a set of 4 lovely christmas themed repurposed printing block tealight holders.
Here's the back story: Handblock printing is a traditional form of adding colourful motifs on fabrics and is still a widely used form in India to make lovely clothes, bedding and furnishings. Designs are hand-carved on wooden blocks by very skilled artisans which are then dipped in colours and used to imprint the designs by hand onto fabrics.
These tealight holders are repurposed printing blocks to create a lovely and versatile home decor piece that could sit on mantelpieces, dining tables, sideboards, windowsills, or as a charming centerpiece for your holiday gatherings. Makes a great budget gift too!
