Hello Everyone,
Ravi here from
With Christmas around the corner, just the time to shed some light on the lovely papier mache art form of Kashmir.
These Christmas baubles are crafted in the Kashmir Valley in India using traditional papier-mâché techniques and painted by hand. Their vibrant colours, floral patterns, and delicate golden accents are created through a complex process that requires time, patience, and great skill.
Papier-mâché has a centuries-old tradition in Kashmir, preserved and passed down through families over many generations. It begins with recycled paper that is carefully prepared, pressed into moulds, and dried for several days before the painting even starts. Each ornament is then decorated by hand, layer by layer, and finally refined with gold accents and a multiple coats of laquer that lends to a lustrous and refined finish.
Making a single piece takes more than a week.
Today this craft is counted among the endangered traditions of the region. Artists work in small workshops or at home, often together with their families, and the number of artists practising this art form has dwindled, with many workshops having to close in recent years.
By choosing to add these to your christmas tree decor you will be doing your bith to consciously support the artisans of kashmir and honour a craft that is deeply rooted in the culture and history of the region.
