*STEPAN SOULTANIAN*

Stepan's instruments have long been a staple in our shop. This is his 2021 model of the Vieuxtemps Del Gesu from 1741. Handling it only for a few moments will allow anyone to realise the impeccable work of its seasoned craftsman. It is a truly beautiful piece that we are proud to have!

Putting a bow across the strings, it will take a similarly short time to notice the signature richness from its Guarneri roots. The sound has an almost nostalgic character, ready to inspire the player to launch deep into the most sentimental romantic repertoire. It is thick and juicy, and projects mightily well too. A properly versatile instrument!

*MARTIN BOUETTE*

Here is a fabulous viola from our collection!

Martin Bouette is a highly respected English Luthier. He worked for many years at J & A Beares until later setting up his own workshop.

Bouette's father, Maurice, was famously a founder of world-renowned violin making school at Newark. You could argue that the Bouette name is synonymous with English violin making in the latter half of the 20th century and onwards.

Martin's instruments are played by some of the world's best players. This particular viola, made in 2009, is a fantastic example of his work. It has a strikingly powerful and focused sound. It will have no problem reaching the back of a concert hall. The A string especially is responsive while also remaining well-rounded, to suit the viola's natural warmth!

I want to hear Walton on this instrument!

Patrick's violins have always been popular in our shop. An Irish maker, Patrick is a meticulous craftsman whose instruments produce a sound that players yearn for. Whether it's classical or folk music, his violins seem to satisfy every need.

This particular violin, dated 2026, is a lovely example of Patrick's work. It offers the most luxurious G string that resonates with a broad and intensely warm sound. The upper register, meanwhile, is beautiful in its capacity for producing an intimately romantic quality. Above all, I think this fiddle differentiates itself by requiring relatively little effort to play, making it perfect for a wide variety of players.

We have a bench ready for a restorer/luthier with set up and restoration experience and who would enjoy being part our renowned West End based workshop team.

Currently in the shop we have a marvellous violin by Mario Gadda c. 1980.

Gadda continued his father's legacy, Gaetano Gadda, who was the only pupil of Stefano Scarampella. Gadda's instruments are famed for their fine craftsmanship and bright, focused sound.

This violin holds up in all regards! The G string is buttery smooth and retains stability in the high positions, while the A string - perhaps the highlight of this particular instrument - is strikingly full-bodied. The projection and responsiveness are very good too without sounding tinny. It would serve any advanced student or professional incredibly well.

I feel like this violin has a particular elegance about it - Borodin's Second String Quartet Movement II immediately came to mind!
