George III Antique Silver Stirrup Cup By Maker John Lautier, London 1773.

A beautifully modelled silver hunting cup in the form of a fox head. Fine features. Lovely expressive face and realistic teeth.

Stamped on the rim with a full set of crisp English silver hallmarks. We have attributed the maker’s mark to John Lautier. The stirrup cup held a drink which was consumed while mounted on horseback, usually prior to a hunt moving off. As it is of small capacity it can be emptied quickly and there is no need to set it down during use.

A very interesting George II Antique Silver Shaving Bowl By Maker David Willaume, London 1742

A handsomely proportioned silver shaving basin dating to the mid-1700s, the border engraved with a cypher for George Booth, the 2nd Earl of Warrington. With a plain form and good weight, the dish is lovely to handle; underneath you can see charming tell-tale signs of the handcrafted workmanship. Gentle traces of the earlier gilding are still visible.

Stamped underneath with a full set of English silver hallmarks. There is also the engraved scratchweight of 33=4, and an old museum loan number.

This basin very likely formed part of “The Warrington Plate”, a magnificent collection of silverwares assembled by George Booth, 2nd Earl of Warrington, at his family estate Dunham Massey during the first half of the 18th century.

A beautifully handcrafted George III antique silver soup tureen by makers Sebastian and James Crespel, London 1762.

Of Rococo form with a matching cover, oval-bellied shape with cast side handles, shaped feet, and broad gadroon borders. Hand engraved on the front is an expansive armorial within a scroll cartouche and side flanked by chased flower ornaments. Excellent size, suitable for vegetables, soups, and stews.

Stamped underneath the body and on the edge of the top rim with a full set of English silver hallmarks.

Antique silver tureens with side carrying handles were introduced during the reign of George II. The lid/cover helped to keep the contents warm. They are generally oval-shaped, although they can be round or rectangular. Some have detachable liners and/or matching stands.

A Superb German Antique Silver Owl Drinking Cup By Maker L Neresheimer, Hanau, Chester 1904.

In the Renaissance style, modelled in the form of an owl with hinged wings. The pull off head is gilded inside. Beautifully modelled and engraved, the quality is very realistic.

The collar of the drinks flask is fully stamped with German marks for L Neresheimer of Hanau, Germany and also for the importer Berthold Muller. The collar, head and both wings are all marked with Chester sterling silver import marks for London 1904.

An excellent pair Silver Table Birds By Maker Berthold Muller, Hanau, Germany, Import marks for London 1901.

Beautifully modelled as seagulls with broad feathered wings and animated faces. Large size and excellent weight. These birds are very realistic and have skilfully chased detail. Would look fantastic on the dining table or in a cabinet display.

Both birds are stamped on the edge of each wing. One wing has German silver marks for Hanoi. The other wing has English import marks for London 1901 and “925” for sterling silver.

Berthold Mueller was an import firm, who distributed a lot of Neresheimer silver. The firm changed its name in 1915 to Berthold Muller and was listed as wholesale silversmiths and jewellers, antique reproduction in silver, ivories, miniatures, enamels, and so forth.

A magnificent pair of Victorian antique silver caddies set in a box by makers Joseph and John Angell, London 1838.

This pair of silver tea caddies were designed for green and black tea, with hinged, domed covers and a fitted wooden carrying case with brass handle and cartouche. The boxes are extensively hand chased with Chinoiserie figural scenes.

Flat chased silver “in the Chinese taste” enjoyed a brief period of remarkable popularity from the 1670’s to the early Queen Anne period. This charming decoration of Chinese figures, birds, foliage etc. is rarely found and adds considerably to the piece. View our article on chinoiserie silver.

Each is stamped underneath with a full set of matching English silver hallmarks, the lid with lion and maker’s mark.

Outstanding quality George II Antique Silver Salvers By Maker John Hugh Le Sage, London 1728/30.

A matching pair of square salvers with canted corner feet and hand chased decoration. Excellent patina and generous proportions. The detail of the engravings is particularly fine; the borders with Vitruvian scroll interspersed with vignettes containing shells, face masks, and dragons; the armorials within an elaborate figural cartouche. Very crisp engravings.

Both are engraved with the marital arms of Henry Drax (c1693–1755), a British Whig politician and his wife (and first cousin), Elizabeth Ernle (c1697–1759. The couple married on or before 23 Dec 1719. The Drax/Ernle marriage was a pivotal point in the Drax family’s history, as it combined three massive fortunes: those of the Erles of Charborough, the Draxes of Yorkshire and Barbados, and the Ernles of Wiltshire.

A decorative George III Antique Silver Salver By Maker Ebenezer Coker, London 1761.

Of plain design with a shaped shell border and raised on three pad feet. Nice quality. These small trays are often referred to as waiters. Useful size, ideal to stand a glass or bottle. Stamped underneath with a full set of English silver hallmarks.

The traditional form of salver with plain flat surfaces and small feet at the edge, rarely found before the reign of George I, was made in various forms such as round, rectangular, oval and octagonal and are an ideal starting off point for collectors of early silver. The term “waiter” is not commonly used but relates to small examples less than 6 or 7 inches; these have become very popular now to stand a bottle or wine glass.

An exceedingly rare Charles II antique silver skillet by maker Francis Leake, London 1665.

With a distinctive hand beaten finish, very few of these survive, and this example bears all the features described in the textbooks with its plain, cylindrical body, matching cover, S-scroll handle, and 3 stylised hoof feet.

The pull-off top is of bleeding bowl form and can be used to serve the warm soup/food; it has a pierced handle with an engraved armorial. The body has the trademark cartouche applied to the front which holds the cover in place. The underside has an old museum loan number, and paper collection label. A very unusual object with a distinguished provenance.

Marks. Stamped underneath the body and on the side of the cover with a full set of English silver hallmarks, the lid handle with lion and maker’s mark.
