David Shrigley – Fill The Space With Your Message 2018

This work is a classic example of Shrigley’s deadpan, confrontational humour. The hand painted pink text sits awkwardly yet deliberately within a white field, surrounded by energetic blue brushstrokes that feel both decorative and oppressive. The instruction “Fill the space with your message” becomes paradoxical: the space is already filled, leaving no room for genuine expression.
Shrigley exposes the emptiness of modern communication, branding, slogans, social media posts, where messages are demanded constantly, regardless of meaning. The crude acrylic lettering rejects polish or authority, reinforcing his critique of overproduced visual culture.
