The Art of Non-Attachment

Wrapped and still, the body becomes an anchor for consciousness to discover its own weightlessness. Sitting in perfect stillness, another self begins to rise, to separate. This is meditation’s deepest teaching: the gradual release of our death-grip on identity itself.

In yoga philosophy, this represents the transcendence of Abhinivesha, that primal fear of death, of loss, of letting go that keeps us frantically grasping at the impermanent. But here, in this anonymous hotel room turned monastery, we witness something extraordinary: we need not fear dissolution because we are not what dissolves. The body remains; consciousness expands beyond it.

This echoes verse 20 from the second chapter of the Bhagavad Gita: “He is never born, nor does he ever die; nor once having been, does he cease to be. Unborn, eternal, everlasting, ancient, he is not slain when the body is slain.”* In the rising figure, seeing this ancient truth made contemporary, that what we fear to lose was never ours to begin with, and what we truly are cannot be lost. The hotel room becomes the perfect setting for this realisation: a space that belongs to no one and everyone, where we practice the art of non-attachment simply by being temporary guests.

As the conscious mind grows quiet, something remarkable happens, we begin to witness the subconscious mind itself, to observe the very mechanics of our own awareness. The separation in the image isn’t metaphorical; it’s experiential. In deep meditation, we discover we are both the observer and the observed, both the one who sits and the one who rises.

What moves me most about capturing this moment is how it reveals that transcendence requires no special place, only the courage to stop fleeing from our own impermanence. We are always already where we need to be; we need only release our grip on needing to be anywhere else at all.

The true alchemy of meditation reveals itself not in the moments we sit on our mats, but in how we carry that stillness into the rushing river of existence. Like compound interest, each moment of practice weaves itself into the very fabric of our being.

We often misunderstand meditation as retreat from the world. But its greatest gift lies in teaching us to be of the world without being consumed by it. We learn the profound art of witnessing, observing thoughts without becoming their prisoner, watching emotions arise and dissolve like clouds across an infinite sky.

This is where the magic happens. As Viktor Frankl writes, in the space between stimulus and response, meditation creates a sacred pause. When life presents its chaos, the urgent email, the traffic jam, the harsh word, we discover options our previous selves never knew existed. The anger still arises, but we are no longer anger. We become the sky in which all weather patterns pass.

The compound effect is real and profound. Each session deposits resilience, perspective, compassion into our inner bank account. We begin to understand that peace isn’t the absence of turbulence, it’s our capacity to remain centred within it.

In a world that profits from our reactivity, meditation becomes quiet revolution. and sitting still in Luxembourg, unmoved by surrounding frenzy, embody humanity’s greatest superpower: the ability to choose our response to life.

Meditation offers us sovereignty over our own experience. In stillness, we don’t leave the world behind. We learn to move through it like water, fluid, responsive, but never losing our essential nature.

New Siddhis Unlocked…

लघिमा सिद्धि - Laghimā Siddhi : the subtle art of lightness. Not just levitation of the body, but of the mind, the heart, the story we tell ourselves about who we are.

and I spent the past month in India, immersed in the Teacher Training at , a sacred little ecosystem of cows, yogis, banyan trees, and timeless wisdom.

Each day began in stillness: meditation before the sun, followed by asana, chanting, and studying ancient texts that whisper secrets we’re almost ready to hear. Slowly, the noise quieted. The body softened. The mind began to float.

What we thought was discipline became devotion. What we thought was effort became grace. And what we thought was gravity, turned out to be just another illusion we could unlearn.

Turns out, when you surrender enough, even the Earth lets you go.

Sākṣī – The Witness

I have just emerged from the Teacher Training at Govardhan Eco Village, India, a journey not just of movement, but of stillness; not just of learning, but of unlearning…

Yoga, in its truest form, is the practice of witnessing. Not merely the postures, the breath, or the mind’s chatter, but the very nature of our existence. To stand in the space of Sākṣī, the silent observer, is to watch the self dissolve and reform in each passing moment. It is here that we begin to see: the ways the ego reaches to shine, the ways it contracts in fear, the subtle ways we cling or recoil. And just as in life, on the mat, we make choices, to engage or avoid, to lean in or step back, to meet resistance with curiosity or with retreat…

Yet, the paradox of witnessing is this: the more we observe, the less we remain attached to the one who observes. The idea of ‘self’ becomes porous, shape-shifting between the one who acts and the one who watches. Who, then, are we…? The one struggling through the posture, or the one aware of the struggle…? The one avoiding the challenge, or the one recognising avoidance…?

The inner and outer worlds are yoked more deeply than we ever knew. If we resist the hard work on the mat, where else in life are we resisting the necessary transformations…? If we collapse when no one is watching, where else are we relinquishing responsibility for our own evolution…? The discipline of yoga is not about perfecting shapes, it is about refining our awareness, about peeling away the illusion of separateness until we begin to see clearly…

This journey has been a mirror, a quiet unveiling, a space where surrender and effort coexist. And for this, my heart overflows with gratitude, for my teachers .azahar & .lunegova, whose wisdom carved the path, for the mentors , , .berlin & , who held space for our growth, and for , who kept us anchored when the inner waves felt unsteady.

In the end, yoga is not about what we do, but what we see, and beyond that, the realisation that there is no ‘other’ to witness, only the eternal unfolding of the self.
