The five-minute check that can prevent a washing machine breakdown: clean the pump filter.

Coins, hair clips, fluff and other debris can collect inside it, restricting drainage and putting extra strain on the pump. If your machine is slow to drain, smells unpleasant or leaves water in the drum, the filter is a sensible place to start.

Check your manufacturer’s instructions first, switch the machine off and keep a towel or shallow tray nearby — some water will escape when you open it.
