Bryars & Bryars

Bryars & Bryars Antiquarian bookshop in London's West End; specialists in original antique maps and atlases. We welcome new collectors and gift enquiries.

Rare and antiquarian books, maps and prints, particularly atlases and original antique maps of all parts of the world printed circa 1500-1900, a golden age of discovery and decorative map-making; we always carry a selection of separately issued and folding maps. We also sell early printed books, classical texts and translations, history, literature and travels, and offer a range of antique topographical and natural history prints. Member of the Antiquarian Booksellers’ Association (ABA).

“This is one of the best purchases I have ever made” - so says Mr Simon Heffer, who not only bought his 20 volume Orwell from your very own Bryars & Bryars but has been kind enough to let us advertise the fact. Go to The Telegraph to read his thoughtful and passionate defence of the well made book; and tell us your opinion (Tim is a thoroughgoing proper book lover and I am a greedy wretch who buys multiple editions and formats because that is a lady’s prerogative)

This Geneva Bible was printed in Amsterdam in 1633 and smuggled into England both in the teeth of Laudian reform and twenty-odd years after James I’s Authorised version made Bibles like this… unauthorised. But the false imprint - imprinted at London by Christopher Barker in 1599 - handily circumvents the issue as it was not illegal to own a Bible of this kind, so long as it was innocently published before the Authorised version came in. And although we are generally pro-KJV and anti-Puritan at Bryars & Bryars, we are also pro-liberty and anti-censorship.

Delighted to be first through the door at Sotheran's today, with friends, author A.J. West and ILAB President Angus O'Neill. Richard, Aoife and Oriana were toasting Sotheran's return to ground floor retail, here in Cecil Court (in number 8, which happens to be my old gaff). Wonderful to have them as neighbours!

Punning 1882 American trade card, ‘The New Colossus of Roads’, celebrating the recent expansion of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad. The railroad map is contained within a colossal uniformed figure astride the Gulf of California, with a smokestack belching a plume.

20+ framed maps and prints ready to go. Map fair or moving house? Either way, it’s an example of the ruthlessly efficient packing skills we bring to our personal and professional lives. Anything you buy from us this weekend at the London Map Fair 2025 gets the full Bryars and Bryars service. Let’s just hope everything gets on to the right van…

The London Map Fair 2025 (picture unrelated) is THIS WEEKEND and everything is FINE. The mobile card reader hasn’t suddenly stopped working; the sandwich committee is not in last-minute crisis negotiations about the addition of a new menu item; we haven’t not yet started packing. We have several days in which to enjoy total calm, because, as I mentioned before, everything is fine.

The London Map Fair 2025 hurtles towards us, an unstoppable force. Happily for you, despite continued domestic upheaval (80% of our stuff in storage and the rest in those massive zip-up laundry bags every Briton will find occasion to buy at least once in their lives) Tim is the original immovable object. Neither rain, nor snow, nor sleeping on a sofa-bed shall stay this map man from bringing you all the excellence you’ve come to expect from LMF.
