Butchoff Antiques was started by Ian Butchoff, who developed his passion and knowledge from an early age, by accompanying his Silver Dealer father on long trips to the country and early morning markets from Portobello to Bermondsey. He then traded from a number of premises before moving to Kensington Church Street, and he is acknowledged today among his peers as one of the leading experts in exhibition quality 19th Century Furniture in the country. Not only is Butchoff Antiques one of the founding members of LAPADA – The Association of Art & Antiques Dealers, but Ian also sits on the board of Directors. Last year they won the prestigious Country Life LAPADA Object of the Year 2010 for their exquisite Hausburg Cabinet, completed in 1857.s

Maker Focus: Paul Sormani (active 1847-1934). The young Paul came to Paris from Italy (so perhaps he was Paolo?) at the age of 30 and quickly gained a reputation with his so-called “meubles de luxe.” Ranking among the top furniture makers of Paris during the second half of the 19th century, he counted the Empress Eugénie among his clients.

Now, with a bit of imagination and artificial magic, we can imagine Sormani’s creations in completely new interiors.

Capsule exhibition of a suite of furniture by François Linke (1855-1946). Our new window display brings together half a dozen pieces of furniture by the famous cabinetmaker, allowing us to imagine what Linke’s showroom on the Place Vendôme in Paris might have looked like.

Linke was born in Bohemia (present day Czech Republic) and moved to Paris to pursue his craft. He is remembered as the last great Parisian ébéniste who upheld the highest standards of cabinetmaking.

He exhibited at several international exhibitions, including in Paris in 1900, St Louis (USA) in 1904 and Liège (BE) in 1905. He also exhibited in London at the Franco-British exhibition of 1908.

Inspired by the pre-revolutionary Louis XV & Louis XVI style, Linke adapted his future to modern times. Working with the sculptor Léon Messagé, the bronze mounts are unique to his furniture and compliments the fluid forms of his designs.

Something big is on the way! This ingenious mechanical table needs to be seen to be believed… the prototype was invented by Jean-François Oeben in the 18th century for Madame de Pompadour’s bedroom in Versailles.

The greatest 19th century Parisian cabinetmakers emulated Oeben’s designs to showcase their exceptional skills, matching those of the great master himself.

We’ve captured all the tricks and secrets of this ‘table à la Bourgogne’ in a video which we will share soon so follow us if you’d like to see more!

I got carried away dreaming about the Grand Tour when writing a recent blog post on the subject. It made me imagine where some of our Italian souvenirs may have originally been placed… in scholar’s studies, aristocratic libraries, and grand country homes. From furniture inlaid with hardstone florentine panels to Roman micromosaics and academic reductions of famous Greco-Roman vases, Butchoff is constantly on the hunt for Grand Tour marvels both big and small. Our latest newsletter brings the story alive, sign up to our newsletter via the link in the bio.

Wagner. But not Richard!

When most people hear the name Wagner and 19th century Germany in the same breath, their mind goes straight to the operas, the Ring Cycle, Bayreuth, all that theatrical thunder. But Ferdinand Wagner the Younger (1847 to 1927) was working in Munich at exactly the same time, leaving his mark on an entirely different kind of stage. No relation to the composer as far as anyone has established, but both men were intoxicated by mythology and allegory. Richard put it to music. Ferdinand put it on walls, extraordinary walls at that, including the Ratskeller in Munich and a hall bearing his name in Passau to this day.

The clocks went forward overnight, the evenings are stretching out again, and there is suddenly something in the air that feels almost Arcadian. So it seems the perfect moment to introduce this three-fold screen, oil on canvas, circa 1890.

Children in a sun-drenched landscape, luminous flesh tones, dense naturalistic foliage, a resting tiger and a peacock in full presence.

Monumental in feeling, intimate in scale.
Made for a great house, and worthy of one again.

Now on view at our Kensington Church Street gallery in London, or enquire via DM. 🦚
