The Compton Verney satinwood commodes by Mayhew & Ince - English, 1767

John, 14th Baron Willoughby de Broke married Louisa North, sister of the Prime Minister, Lord North, 1761. He engaged Robert Adam for alterations to Compton Verney, probably through the connection with Lord North; this was one of Adam's first commissions. Adam also added a new drawing room to the house (see the plan) and it was for this room that the commodes were supplied by Mayhew & Ince in 1767, where they remained until 1931.

The commodes are to date the earliest known pair of demi-lune commodes in the neoclassical style. Robert Adam may well have had influence on their conception.

A watercolour painting circa 1790 by an anonymous artist of a garden view seen through a window from an interior includes a depiction of the commodes. The view of the garden with a lake in the background identifies the interior as the drawing room at Compton Verney.

A large George III blue john and alabaster urn - English, circa 1800

Blue john ores are restricted in volume, and sizeable pieces like the ones used for this urn are very rare.

Blue john was admired by the Romans, and is still mined in Derbyshire, the only place in the world where it occurs. Today a lot of the stone has been used up, and mining is restricted to a very few locations. This makes blue john a very precious and rare material. On display at 26 Bruton Street.

A magnificent George III mahogany commode attributed to William Gomm & Son - English, circa 1765

William Gomm is one of the lesser-known cabinet-makers of 18th century London. He started business at Peterborough Court in Smithfield in 1725 and quickly expanded; by 1736 he had moved to Newcastle House in Clerkenwell, formerly the residence of the Dukes of Newcastle.

A sketchbook with the title ‘Sundry Drawings of Cabinet Wares & c’ and dated 1761 is probably the work of William Gomm’s grandson, also William. This sketchbook, now in the collection of the Winterthur Museum, USA, contains a drawing of a clearly related commode chest which is the crucial link to our outstanding commode - scroll to see the drawing and come and have a look at it in the gallery.
