🛑Brixton Market as we know it could disappear.
Private equity developers are trying to buy Brixton Village and Market Row for £50M. This could mean the clearing out of local independent traders, hiked rents, and Brixton Market filled with faceless multinational chains. Under their model, an estimated 70% of the market could be completely unrecognisable within 3 years.
Our community is not a corporate asset. We are drawing a line.
Local traders have launched an emergency counter-bid to save the market and turn it into a stable, democratically owned space run by the community, for the community. But we cannot win this on paper alone, we need numbers on the ground to show corporate investors we won’t be pushed out.
