From Jingdezhen to Dresden:
Cultural Exchange in the 18th Century
Throughout the late 17th and early 18th
centuries, cultural exchange between Europe and China rode on the back of economic growth underpinned by diplomatic relations mediated via missionaries
rather than ambassadors. Porcelain was an integral part of this“exchange,” in a wider sense. In Saxony, as in Jingdezhen, sales of porcelain kept much needed hard currency flowing into the state coffers. Once arrived on foreign shores, the display of porcelain was a visual representation of a ruler’s worldliness, wealth, and ultimately, his claim to power. In this sense, an alchemical relationship blossomed between Europe and China, as the astronomical and scientific
knowledge that Jesuit missionaries took with them to the Qing court were “exchanged” for Chinese luxury goods that made the return journey back to Europe.

It is a privilege to present a wonderful collection of Meissen brought together by an Asian collector, the first of its kind to return back to Europe for sale.

The stuff that dreams are made of, and a testimony to the influence of a private donations on the future of great museums. What a joy see this exceptional piece of Sèvres porcelain return to its place of origin fills me with so much joy. The acquisition was made possible by the Société des Amis de Versailles ( ) who have steadily been adding to the collection for over 100 years. In 2023 they purchased a rare bouillon cup from a service made for Marie Antoinette in our sale at Bonhams Cornette de Saint Cyr in Paris, and in December they acquired this exceptional soft-paste Sèvres porcelain s***fbox in our London sale room.

Commissioned in 1785 by Madame Adélaïde, daughter of Louis XV, and decorated with her dogs, it is a very rare and intimate example of French Court art in the 18th century. The box is now on display in the New Acquisitions Room at the Palace of Versailles.

This documentary tabatière was commissioned by Mme Adélaïde, daughter of Louis XV and aunt of Louis XVI, in our sale Bonhams yesterday. It is an extraordinarily personal work of art, painted with Adélaïde’s own pets (the white Barbet-poodle was called Vizier if you’re wondering!) and mounted by the King’s jeweller, Charles Ouizille.

The Bonhams ceramics team are truly delighted the was able to purchase this exceptional Sèvres s***fbox, made possible by the . You see it here shown by Department Director Sebastian Kuhn (also known as Mr Husband and one of my new favourite pictures of him, you agree?).

The sale result of £190,000 is a world record for a Sèvres box and topped an excellent season for European ceramics totalling £1.5M this week alone.

A Life in Ceramics: the Peter and Mary White Collection

Peter and Mary started collecting when the queues for the dealers’ exhibitions and fairs went around the block. Think camping chairs, thermos and sandwiches and keen eyes on the ‘competition’. I started in London at the end of that era. The ‘ceramics fair’ at the centre of all the excitement, we would all walk between Grosvenor House and the Ceramics fair, visiting the talks and walking the fairs witj our colleagues, friends and clients. This community of dedicated collectors and specialists was instrumental in the early years of my career in ceramics and I am forever grateful to have experienced this pre-internet ‘golden era’. Peter and Mary were at the centre of it all. It feels like a full-circle moment now as we@are getting so close to bringing the first part pf their collection to the market together, in the hope of encouraging another generation of aspiring collectors
