Notting Hill Carnival in the 70s/80s. London’s first Caribbean carnival was held in 1959 at St Pancras town hall, north London, and was organised by Claudia Jones, co-founder of Brixton-based newspaper the West Indian Gazette. Televised by the BBC for Six-Five Special – a forerunner to Top Of The Pops – it was timed to coincide with a carnival in Trinidad, the largest in the Caribbean.
