WE'VE GONE FOR A WALK UP DIRTY LANE.
(New Year, New Puerile Euphamisms.) 📍📦

Previously at Unit 197 in Borough Yards, we're moving a few doors down to 218, under the arch.

Mobile Art Disco (MAD) is a new, itinerant urban art gallery on a mission to programme some of London’s most inspiring exhibitions around playful (and occasionally attention-seeking) themes in prominent central London spaces.

Conceived as an alternative to existing, exclusive and everyday spaces, MAD will dance to a different drum – engaging in old school, tub-thumping self- promotion whilst bringing together banging new artworks from the most engaging artists – and always with a wicked sense of humour and a welcoming smile.

Francesca Hsieh is an Asian-American director and theatremaker based in London. She has an MA in Theatre Directing from Royal Holloway, University of London, where she studied with director Katie Mitchell and worked with theatre company Complicité.

Prior to this, she completed her BFA in Musical Theatre Performance at the University of Utah. Directing credits include Shakespearean Support Group (Standby for Places - podcast streaming on all platforms), Co***ne Triptych (Great Salt Lake Fringe Festival, winner of Outstanding Live Production), and Mary Stuart (Pioneer Theatre Company, assistant director). An advocate for equity and anti-racism in the arts, her work has been featured in Classical Singer Magazine, American Theatre Magazine, and the Salt Lake Tribune.

With over 30 new works, the show is a celebration of London, Life, Love and the love of life in London, including scenic views from Jess Wilson's 'London Boroughs’ and London Skyline to Toby Goodyear’s gritty underground ‘D-Stock 1980’ and the gorgeous limited edition ‘Londoner’ screen-prints by Catford Creative.

ENO Harewood Artist  

Nkululeko Innocent Masuku is a 33-year old South African operatic tenor. He has received various accolades including a Merit award in the 2019 SAMRO competition and a Drake Calleja trust award. He is a former studio member of the Cape Town Opera and has played Borsa in Rigoletto. He has played other diverse roles such as Tamino in the Magic Flute. He has also performed alongside Eric Owens and other top billed artists in a production of Porgy and Bess presented by a collaboration between the English National Opera and Dutch National Opera. He is currently an ENO Harewood Artist.

'The first piece I created was the portrait of Lilian Bayliss, the woman who created what we now know as the ENO. Not only did she pave the pave way in terms of bringing affordable opera to London Theatres, she also set the tone for the pieces I painted. The artworks were all created from photographs, and the two male portraits are actually of a member of the ENO team, using props from various theatre performances. I have used a mixture of charcoal and acrylic paint in all three paintings, which have areas of refinement and rawness. My aim, very much like a theatrical performance, is to tell a story without dictating the meaning, letting you see all the layers of someone even if they are somewhat concealed by a mask or act.'

She has a intense interest in people and believes everyone has a unique story as does every painting, and how you choose to perceive that person or piece of Art is entirely up to you.

Featured Art: 'i can speak to Angels when I’m alone'

"Working with Tamaki Sugimoto has totally changed the way I paint. We started off with her showing me aspects of her culture from the way her Japanese grandmother prepared fish to composers and conductors that inspire her. I started making images based on her inspiration. They ended up being quite abstract, but it turned out Tamaki could read my drawings like a musical score and actually play them on the cello. She made four incredible performances based on my work. I then translated the sound of her performance into gestures that made up a language for a series of prints and a large painting. I hope that the beauty and the sadness that I uncovered in Tamaki’s playing has come through in this work and gives a truthful sense of her."

Cellist Tamaki Sugimoto is a recipient of various international prizes and performs extensively across the UK, Europe and Far East. Her recent highlights include Saariaho’s Sept Papillons for Solo Cello at Wigmore Hall, a recital at Conway Hall and reaching the semi-finals of the Royal Overseas League’s annual competition with Kofiko Ensemble.

Meet The Artist: Eve De Haan
Featured in ENO: Under The Skin Exhibition

Based in London, Eve De Haan’s portfolio is replete with neon artworks, each sharing a different story, thought or catchphrase through short snippets of text. It’s an approach that developed out of her theology degree, where she realised encapsulating narratives through the written word was the best way to evoke collective emotions in an audience. Neon has allowed her to explore “how malleable definitions of words and phrases can be.” Eve’s artworks probe topics including technology, youth culture, and relationships.

Meet The Artist: Matthew Small
Featured in ENO: Under The Skin Exhibition

Primarily a painter, London-based Small has a strong, compelling style, often choosing discarded objects like car bonnets or old signs instead of canvas for his work. The theme of my work is young, dispossessed people: individuals who feel undervalued, who don’t have a voice, and who get overlooked.

Small explains how the urban debris he paints becomes symbolic of the feeling of being without value: “I thought it’d be interesting to connect the two – that oven door, that shelving unit, that piece of trash to someone – I don’t see it like that, I see that it can be something beautiful and worthwhile.

That’s how I see our young people too. Let’s look at their potential, at the hope that’s in all of them.
