Who We Are
Tim Ingles and Paul Hayday joined Sotheby's in 1994 and 1997 respectively and went on to run the musical instrument department for 15 years. Their achievements included the iconic sale of the collection of Yehudi Menuhin in 1999, which achieved 16 auction records in 100 lots. From 2004 they also offered instruments by private sale and have sold instruments by Stradivari and Guarneri del

Gesu amongst other highly sought-after makers. In 2013 Tim Ingles & Paul Hayday established a specialist musical instrument auction house and dealership under the name Ingles & Hayday to enable them to tailor their services to the specific requirements of their clients. Sotheby's no longer maintains an in house musical instrument department and Tim and Paul act as official Consultants to Sotheby's, with all relevant enquiries being referred directly to Ingles & Hayday. Ingles & Hayday hold two auctions a year in Sotheby's Bond Street galleries and the two companies continue to work closely together to ensure that vendors and buyers of musical instruments are offered the highest-quality service through their combined experience as leaders of the international market. Congratulations to I&H Artist, Sanne Heaven, who recently won the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama Concerto Competition with a performance of the Korngold Violin concerto. Sanne has had an eventful final year at RWCMD, including a concert with BBCNOW and masterclasses with artists such as James Ehnes.

She has also won a scholarship to study for a Masters of Performance degree at the Guildhall under David Takeno. You can expect to see a little more of her as she moves to London to pursue this exciting opportunity!

Given Vuillaume’s reverence for the 1716 ‘Messie’ Stradivari, it is unsurprising that his two string quartets dating from 1865 were conceived as matched sets, with all four instruments made on the Stradivari model. The ‘Caraman de Chimay’ quartet was bought from Vuillaume by Victor Charles Antoine de Riquet, second Duc de Caraman.

This violin was sold by W.E. Hill & Sons to Nathan Posner in 1923, together with the ‘Caraman de Chimay’ viola. It later passed to Sol Kinder and then to Louis Feiler, who owned it from 1938 to 1948. During Feiler’s ownership, both instruments were featured in Ernest Doring’s pamphlet ‘Violins and Violinists’. Around 1980, the violin was sold to Olivier Jaques and remained in the Jaques family for thirty years, before being acquired by the current owner at Sotheby’s in 2009. It was one of the highlights of the 2012 Sotheby’s exhibition of the work of J.B. Vuillaume.
