The Remakers: Material Grrrlz 🧶

Founded by textile artist and educator Alexa Kari, is a community putting a fresh, maximalist spin on fibre art and DIY.

Through its magazine, workshops and online community, Material Grrrlz is inspiring a new generation to pick up their needles, hooks and sewing machines and rethink what they already have. From repurposing scraps and leftover yarn to giving old clothes a new lease of life, making becomes a way to create more consciously, creatively and collectively.

We caught up with Alexa to explore her approach to craft, the role of reuse in her practice, and how Material Grrrlz is helping build a more sustainable second-hand movement.
