Ben’s Book of the Week: GAINING GROUND by Joan Barfoot 🌿

A reissue of Barfoot’s 70s novel about a woman Abraham who leaves her family and goes to live in a cabin near the woods - and it is such a slow-cooking masterpiece!

The passages in which Abraham discovers her selfhood through gardening/walking/observing nature are so calmly joyous. Such a skill to sculpt something so gentle and meditative without ever being dull or repetitive. It also doesn’t shy away from the morality or the psychology of abandonment, but slowly leads you through it all by the hand.

It’s an amazing, smooth, no-wires-showing piece of work. For fans of Bear by Marian Engel or All Fours by Miranda July!

In GHOST MONTH, the spirits of the dead return every September - it’s a holiday of sorts, and living people just have to get on with it. Full of wit, heart and charm, it’s a novel that asks the timeless question: do we only value life when we are reminded that it will end?

Ben’s Book o’ the Week 🏆 is…

A SHORT STAY IN HELL by Steven L. Peck

This wafer-thin novella is an extremely entertaining and thought-provoking sliver - with a Borgesian premise that’ll haunt you: a man wakes up in Hell, but Hell according to this particular Zoroastrian afterlife is an infinite (or at least so large it may as well be infinite) library. He’ll be released when he finds the book of his life in amongst the endless combinations on the shelves.

Peck takes that proposition, knocks on it from every angle, and presents a fable that is both thorough and concise, bombastic in theory and careful in practice, huge on premise but without discarding lived-in characters. My only wish (and not one shared by the central character) is that it was longer…

For fans of Borges, Calvino, Ted Chiang, Kelly Link, Adam Marek…
