At the Aesme School of Flowers a lot of effort goes into writing unique ‘recipes’ for every session - each one a calculated blend of flower forms, textures and colours. But the beauty of using garden-grown materials means that every vase turns out differently. Rather than following a rigid rulebook, we believe that arranging flowers can be an act of self expression, each arrangement a true reflection of the individual hands that created it.

Day One of the second week of our Naturalistic Floral Design course! This week is all about Advanced Design, as we examine each design element in turn. Today students started with shape and form, beginning with a tea bowl design of baby tomatoes, cosmos, chrysanthemum and chickpea, before moving on to a hand tied bouquet of China asters, zinnia, hops on the vine and a sprinkling of weedy fleabane for good measure.

From garden to vase, in our case, means from Hampshire to Shepherd’s Bush! We’re a London flower school, but all of the flowers we use at the Aesme School of Flowers are grown in the Hampshire countryside, less than 100 miles from the studio.

This week during our Naturalistic Floral Design course, students will be using a wide range of interesting materials from chickpea, grape vine and tiny tomatoes to chrysanthemum, sedum and zinnia.

The final day of Week One of our Naturalistic Floral Design Course! This week we covered all the essential techniques for creating a range of designs, from using kenzans (pinholders) and making bouquets using the ‘hand vase’ technique to using chicken wire and foam free mechanics in installations. Today students experimented with ’hana kubari’, wedging short pieces of branches in their vases to create a natural framework for materials. Thank you everyone for a brilliant first week and we look forward to seeing you back in the studio for Week Two:Advanced Design.

Day 3 of the Naturalistic Design Course and we’ve had a blast! Today was all about photographing arrangements against different painted backdrops and making a group installation with chicken wire inspired by a “kitchen garden gone wild”. Thank you so much to all our brilliant students for your enthusiasm and teamwork, to .studio for your fantastic design direction and Min for all your help!
