NEW NEO-JAZZ RELEASE DIRECT FROM GERMANY

Oraculu by Oraculu

Two Thou’s hybrid jazz act Oraculu debuts with a 12” in the realm of spiritual electronics, carrying the music touch of Berlin’s hottest jazz cats such as Monica Mussungo, Taymour Khajah, Ziggy Zeitgeist, El Congo Allen and Dylan Greene, plus a remix by Toribio, and a spoken blessing by Sonny Daze. Expect to oscillate.

This music was born in Berlin, matured with me through a winter in the rural Sardinia, and ended up on wax through Chicago and New York. “With this record, that to me sounds in-between worlds, I want to recall that jazz and electronic music both emerged as inventions, and it seems to me they’re both suggesting us to keep inventing.” (Two Thou)

Abdou El Omari - Nuits De Printemps

First issue of this previously unreleased Oriental psych monster from the organ king of Casablanca, combining traditional rhythms with spaced out modern sounds. Third part of Abdou El Omari’s Nuits-trilogy. This album contains dazzling instrumentals spiced up with some traditional vocal parts. While playing his fine melodies Abdou switches swiftly from his “Farfisa Professional” mothership to an analog ARP.

The unique thrills provided by Moroccan composer Abdou El Amari’s obscure 1970s work, which combine electronic interpretations of North African and American funk rhythms, wild and wacky organ motifs, and copious amounts of tape delay. Belgian imprint Radio Martiko has already reissued two instalments of his infamous - and hard to find - Nuits De trilogy of albums, and here completes the set. “Nuits De Printemps” is dedicated to spring and therefore a little breezier and looser than its contemporaries, with a little more emphasis on live percussion amongst the synthesizers and drum machines. Predictably, it’s a mind-altering treat from start to finish.

SLY AND THE FAMILY STONE - THERES A RIOT GOIN’ ON

Sly And The Family Stone’s influential masterpiece of darkly psychedelic funk turned 50 in 2021. The album marked a shift in the band’s tone, striking a more political and militant vibe while showing Sly Stone’s disillusionment with the promise of the 60s.

At the same time, it was also a big commercial success, hitting #1 on the album charts while the single “Family Affair” topped the singles charts. Its influence rang throughout the 70s as all of the funk innovators took their cues from this seminal album, and its songs became a favorite for hip hop artist mining sampling gold decades later. It came in at #81 on Rolling Stone’s Greatest Albums Of All Time and besides “Family Affair,” the album features the tracks “Just Like A Baby” and “Africa Talks To You (“Asphalt Jungle”).”

CELEBRATING THE 75TH BIRTHDAY OF ONE OF THE PIONEERS OF CONTEMPORARY RnB

DOUBLE LP + 7” RE-PRESS OF “SONGS IN THE KEY OF LIFE” ORIGINALLY RELEASED IN 1976

For the five years between 1972 and 1976, Stevie Wonder was on fire and exuded an expansive and potent energy that seemed to rise from its own volition. During this ‘classic period’ he released some of his finest music earning him near universal love and admiration.
Wonder was bursting with inspiration and in 1972 he released two albums: Music of My Mind and Talking Book. The following year he put out the Grammy Award winning Album of the Year Innervisions and he later received the same accolade for his 1974 effort Fulfillingness’ Full Finale. And then he went quiet before releasing the album that would not only be the pinnacle of his career, but one of the best albums of all time.

“HOTTER THAN JULY” ORIGINALLY RELEASED IN 1980

Released in 1980, Stevie Wonder’s Hotter Than July is a critically acclaimed, politically charged, and joyous blend of funk, reggae, and soul that served as his commercial comeback. The album is best known for driving the campaign for Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday to become a national holiday with “Happy Birthday” and featuring “Master Blaster (Jammin’),” a tribute to Bob Marley

NIGERIA 70 – WEST AFRICAN COMPILATION ALBUM
FILLED WITH HIGHLIFE TO AFRO-FUNK AND EVERYTHING INBETWEEN

Nigeria 70: Lagos Jump, another essential box of West African dynamite with the emphasis firmly on the dancefloor. From the heavy jazz of Peter King to Bola Johnson’s scratchy Afro funk and the rolling grooves of juju legend Sir Shina Peters, the album captures a rich and unique era in West African music.

NEW UK JAZZ ALBUM DIRECT FROM SOUTH EAST LONDON COURTESY OF THE STEAM DOWN FAMILY

Steam Down is a British Afro-Punk band, weekly event and music community based in London, England.
In a finely tuned alchemy of sound, space and energy, Steam Down have mastered the art of enriching human emotional, social and collective state of being through music.

Founded by multi-instrumentalist, composer and producer Ahnansé in 2017, the initial event was created to connect London based musicians and producers. Since then it has evolved into a weekly event where Steam Down artists and its extended musical family generate spontaneous sonic soundscapes reflecting their lives in the city.

Steam Down has quickly become a household name in London’s music scene, receiving two Jazz FM awards including the innovation award sponsored by Mishcon De Reya and live experience of the year award sponsored by Yamaha UK featuring Kamasi Washington.
This is their debut album and definitely not one to be missed!

BATCH OF 2ND HAND “AWESOME TAPES FROM AFRICA” RELEASES JUST LANDED IN THE SHOP

Back in 2002, Awesome Tapes from Africa label founder Brian Shimkovitz was studying ethnomusicology when his research sent him to Ghana.

The DIY cassette culture had exploded across West Africa in the early 1980s to fill the gaps in music distribution across the region. “The cassette format made it possible for smaller music groups to have something they could distribute and sell to their fellow language speakers across the region,” Shimkovitz says.

That resulted in thousands of DIY tapes being sold at markets and roadside stalls across the region. “Right up until the mid 2000s, the cassette was still on sale everywhere,” Shimkovitz says. “When I got back to New York, I had stacks of tapes and I thought a blog was a good way to share the music with the world.”

He called the blog Awesome Tapes from Africa, and here we are 20 years on still celebrating the incredibly diverse catalogue of music from the continent.

Hugely anticipated J Jazz Volume 5 is here!

J Jazz: Deep Modern Jazz From Japan 1970-1988
Volume 5

This final volume features a selection of tracks that is as diverse as it is deep, reflecting the rich and varied Japanese jazz scene that spanned from the late 1960s to the late 1980s, a golden era of innovation and creativity. J Jazz volume 5 sees compilers Tony Higgins and Mike Peden dig ever deeper into their respective record collections to reveal tracks that encompass myriad styles including white hot jazz funk fusion from Toshiyuki Honda (Eastern Legacy) and Mikio Masuda (Sonic Barrier), super rare ethnic jazz crossover by Crystal Zone - their one-off 45 promo release from 1971, Rai Rai, a deconstructed and abstract jazz classic by Yasuhiro Kohno with his solo piano rendition of My Favourite Things, and Mile and Half’s skin-tearing, shredding freak-out from their mega rare private press album.

Most of the tracks on this collection are being reissued for the first time, many of them only available previously on extremely limited and mega-rare private press or independent releases. J Jazz volume 5 is a fitting end to a compilation series that helped create a new audience and appreciation of Japanese jazz.

NEW BBE RELEASES FRESH OFF THE PRESS

Esa Williams :: Dala What We Must

Marking twenty years since South African producer and DJ Esa Williams left Cape Town, Dala What We Must is a deeply personal and expansive debut LP, an exploration of movement, memory, and sound shaped by two decades of creative evolution.

Co-created with collaborator and multi-instrumentalist Robin G. Breeze, the album deftly combines field recordings, layered instrumentation, and emotionally resonant compositions into a nuanced, globally influenced body of work. It also stands as Esa’s most collaborative release to date, featuring contributions from musicians across London, Oaxaca, Nairobi, and Cape Town, each adding their own creative energy to a project built on openness, trust, and shared experience.

BRIAN JACKSON :: Now More Than Ever

Songs such as Lady Day & John Coltrane, The Revolution Will Not Be Televised, Home Is Where The Hatred Is, Winter In America, The Bottle and more soundtracked a generational movement of Black Consciousness in the 70s and 80s. As Brian says, ‘This album is one way to connect to what we were about in the 70s; we were about change and this is part of the lineage of resistance. These tracks mark a period of time when resistance was essential and now a younger generation has picked them up.’

The formidable stable of artists contributing to each track and the excellent production from Louie Vega and Kenny ‘Dope’ Gonzalez make this album an event in itself. However, these songs are there to be enjoyed as a canon or as individual masterpieces, whether on the dancefloor or on a home system.

BBE Music’s celebrated J Jazz compilation series reaches its fifth and final volume in early 2026, culminating in a track list that maintains the exceptionally high standard first set with volume one back in 2018.
