I love hearing the stories behind the pianos I am working on. Often they are treasured possessions that have been passed through the family, from one generation to the next.

Here is an old card that had been left in a piano several decades before I tuned the instrument. I wonder how many people through the years have enjoyed playing these keys?

HAPPY (belated) NEW YEAR!

I have had a great start to 2025 with a diary full of tunings and repairs in Aberdeenshire.

I am now, however, on my way back to London and taking bookings for the remainder of January. So, whether your New Year’s resolution involves learning to play, or you’ve just noticed it’s been a while since you last showed your piano some love and attention, get in touch and I’d love to get you booked in!

I will be back up in Aberdeenshire in April so if you missed me this time round let me know and we can get a provisional date in the diary for then!

As I finish up the last few jobs of 2024, I have been looking to the new year and doing some planning.

While I usually live and work in London, for the first few weeks of January I will be based in Pitmedden in Aberdeenshire (with a car and happy to travel!). If anyone in the north has a piano in need of some love and attention please do get in touch. I’d love to chat and see if we can get you booked in!

Here we have a spinet piano I tuned recently.

Upright spinets started being made in the 1930s to provide a smaller, cheaper alternative to a standard upright piano. It has what's called a drop-action which sits behind the keys. While this seems very nifty and compact it does mean the tone of the instrument is often not as good and repairs can be very complicated and therefore costly.

This being said, if kept in good condition and regularly tuned, these little pianos can be a lovely instrument for those very low on space or beginners.

Ever wondered what it looks like under the keys?! Well, here you go!

On my last post, I mentioned that I recently spent some time cleaning up the key frame on my parents' old Bechstein.

Once all the keys had been lifted out, it became apparent that once upon a time, some small creatures were hanging out in the piano and having a nibble at (or entirely demolishing as the case may be) the felt washers on the front rail, not ideal.

Unfortunately, small pests (such as mice, moths, wood worm etc.) can cause some serious issues in pianos. Fortunately though, in this case, the washers were easily replaced.

While I was visiting my parents over summer I began work on our Bechstein upright piano. It was made around 1888 and was my grandpa's before he passed it on to my parents.

During this visit, I focused on cleaning and fixing up the keys and key frame.

As you can see from the before photo, it has been a long time since those keys have been taken out. I even found two sixpences under them!

Recently I had the pleasure of being asked to tune the piano at SCRUM Theatre, a new arts centre in Hammersmith. If you haven't checked them out yet then do! They've got some exciting things planned for this incredible new space.

A couple of weeks ago I made the most of a trip to a friend's house and took the opportunity to check out their piano.

It had recently been moved to their house from a Grandparents place and, despite my expectations, had managed to keep pitch remarkably well!

It soon became clear though that the hammers weren't springing back properly after playing a note. It is quite common with pianos over a certain age for the Jack springs to need replaced - and this was exactly the case here.

As this is quite a lengthy job requiring specialist tools and parts that I did not have to hand, It will have to wait until my next visit to be fixed. The good news is though that once done, they shouldn't need to be replaced again for another 80 or so years...!

If you are concerned that your piano isn't sounding quite right or the keys aren't as responsive as you'd expect, get in touch! It could be that your piano is also in need of some new springs!

Over the summer, I've been enjoying taking a break from London, spending some time up north travelling and seeing family, hence my lack of social media presence.

I did of course take my tuning lever with me though, and over the next few days, I will post about a couple of the pianos I've had the pleasure of tuning while I've been away.

I am also going to begin refurbishing the family piano which inspired me to become a piano technician in the first place, so stay tuned for updates!

Recently, I had the joy of tuning and repairing this lovely, treasured family piano.

It hadn't been tuned in a while so I brought it back up to pitch before fine-tuning it. I also took one of the hammers home from a key that wasn't playing and replaced the tape; now it plays good as new! If you look carefully you may be able to spot it on the first picture 🔎
