Should the floor match the walls? It's the question we get asked more than any other, and the honest answer is that there are two right ones.

The first is to run the same tile straight across the floor and up the walls. Done that way, the room stops having edges. Your eye isn't stopped at every junction, and the space reads as one continuous surface. In a small bathroom, it's often the single most effective thing you can do to it.

The second is to change deliberately. A darker floor beneath lighter walls settles a room and gives it something to stand on. The change is doing a job, and it looks like a decision because it was one.

What rarely works is the version in between. Nearly matching. Close enough that it reads as an accident rather than an intention, and no amount of quality in the tile itself will rescue it.

You can choose every material in a bathroom perfectly and still be disappointed by the room, because of the light.

Most bathrooms get one fitting, straight in the middle of the ceiling. It flattens every surface, drops hard shadows into the corners, and puts your face in shadow at the mirror at exactly the moment you need to see it properly. The mirror is almost always the last thing anyone chooses. Tiles first, then the bath, then the taps, and the mirror gets picked at the end from whatever's left.

It's usually the piece that changes the room the most. A mirror takes the light you already have and gives it straight back, which is why a well placed one can make a small bathroom stop feeling small.
