Behind every finished space is a collection of materials, finishes and textures that set the direction long before the final pieces come together.

For the Penthouse Edit, we wanted the palette to have a sense of weight and character, with enough variation in texture and finish to keep it interesting.

This is the part of the process we particularly enjoy — seeing how individual materials begin to make sense when placed alongside one another.

A different side of city living.

There’s something about a penthouse that allows materials to do the talking.

For this edit, we wanted to play with the contrast between strong architectural surfaces and the details that make a space feel comfortable.

Honed marble, smoked walnut, textured wool, leather and warm bronze bring depth, while faceted glass adds a little light and movement.

The result is a space that feels smart and modern, but still somewhere you can call home. And when the lights of the city come on, it takes on a completely different feel.

This week’s edition of The Designer’s Edit explored the architectural palette behind a Provençal estate.

Today’s moodboard looks a little closer.

Not at the architecture, but at the objects and materials that give a space its sense of permanence.

A favourite ceramic passed between generations. Linen that softens over time. A well-used oak table. Silver that carries the gentle marks of celebration and everyday life.

These are often the details that bring warmth to an interior. Individually they may seem modest, but together they create spaces with depth, character and authenticity.

It’s a reminder that successful interiors aren’t defined by one statement piece. They’re built through layers of carefully considered materials, each contributing to a story that unfolds over time.

After exploring The Desert Modern concept yesterday, this is how the palette begins to take shape.

Materials become objects. Textures become atmosphere.

Rather than selecting pieces individually, we start by asking how they relate to one another - how stone softens against silk, how warm metals catch the light, and how rich timber grounds the entire scheme.

It’s often these relationships that give an interior its quiet confidence.

Rather than focusing on statement materials, the palette is built around atmosphere: sheer raw silk filtering natural light, Taj Mahal quartzite introducing subtle movement, smoked walnut adding depth, and carefully selected finishes that create warmth without excess.

When every detail has been coordinated behind the scenes, the result is an experience that feels seamless; for both the designer and the client.

Some places draw us in because of their architecture.

Others because of the way they make us feel.

Lake Como and a London townhouse couldn’t be more different in character, yet both have become enduring sources of inspiration for timeless interiors.

One celebrates openness, natural light and a connection to the landscape.

The other embraces proportion, craftsmanship and a sense of permanence.

Neither is better.

They simply tell different stories.
