The year is 1670, and the palace in Edinburgh has just opened their first official physic garden. The botanists are eager to display their exotic finds from the new world and to sell their cultivated healing herbs to the royal apothecaries. The tiny winding rows of plants are bursting with earthy green herbs and bright splashes of colour. Your eye falls on a basket set down along the path with freshly cut rosemary, sage and marjoram. Its fresh garden scent reminds you of your grandmother’s cooking and long hazy summer days spent outside in the sun. Just to be here among the leaves makes you feel more healthy and alive.

Your boots are covered in the peaty soil from the trail you followed through the gentle rain and dotted forests. A sweet earthy scent surrounds you in something at once mysterious and familiar, and you drink in its resinous darkly glowing warmth. Before you, the dramatic curve of mountains and lochs form a dancing blue and purple wave against the rusty sunset sky. Fishing boats bob gently in the harbour as the morning sea salt sprays upon the stones. Nets hang drying, and somewhere behind the whitewashed cottages, a garden blooms vivid with geranium and lavender. A woman crosses the cobbles with an armful of fresh cut sage and orange blossoms, humming an ancient song. The cafés have just begin to open to eager patrons ready for breakfast tea and lemon cake.

The newly crowned Mary Queen of Scots is lifted high above the court in the warm yellow hall of the castle, and the crowd cheers and drinks to her good health. The musicians play long into the night, and the dancing courtiers laugh and dine on exotic citrus fruits and wine.
