Speaking live on television, Freeman said: “We have somebody sitting in the White House who’s leading us down a sh*thole.”

Morgan Freeman paused before answering a question about American politics.

“Can I use any profanity?” he asked.

What followed was one of the bluntest political statements the usually private 88-year-old actor has made in public.

He was talking about President Donald Trump and the 34 felony counts on which Trump was convicted in New York in 2024 for falsifying business records.

Freeman couldn’t understand how someone with those convictions could return to the most powerful political office in the country.

“How do you do that?” he asked.

Trump received an unconditional discharge, meaning he avoided prison, probation and a fine. He has denied wrongdoing and challenged the conviction.

Freeman then made an even more serious comparison. He said the mood in America reminded him of Germany in 1935, referring to the rise of the N***s and the gradual removal of people’s rights.

That comparison will divide people. Trump’s supporters are likely to see it as unfair and extreme, while his critics will say Freeman was warning about where unchecked power can lead.

Either way, he clearly wasn’t trying to soften his words or please everyone watching.

But his strongest point came at the end, when he spoke directly to younger Americans who feel worried, angry or powerless.

He didn’t tell them to argue online or give up on the country.

“If you don’t agree with it, there is one sure way to change the direction of our country: Vote.”

That part matters, whatever side of politics you’re on.

People can strongly disagree about Trump, Freeman or the comparison he made. That is part of living in a democracy. The answer should still be decided by ordinary people turning up and using their vote.

Police have finally identified the “Grim Reaper” who caused panic by appearing on the roof of a Welsh hospital.

The man dressed in the black hooded cloak has been named as Eddie Hi**er, from Hammersmith.

Well, it was always going to be him, wasn’t it? 😂

Patients and staff looked up to find Eddie standing silently on the roof with a large scythe.

He didn’t wave or explain himself. He simply stared down at the hospital, leaving several patients wondering whether somebody knew something they didn’t.

Staff called the police and fire service after he refused to come down.

When officers asked what he was doing, Eddie reportedly shouted that he was “just waiting for someone”.

That didn’t exactly calm things down.

After a long conversation, officers finally persuaded him to leave the roof. Eddie then insisted that the whole thing had been an innocent misunderstanding.

“I was only rehearsing,” he explained. “I’ve got to keep in practice.”

The case later reached Llandudno Magistrates’ Court, where Eddie was fined £200 for causing a nuisance.

Magistrates pointed out that dressing as Death and standing outside a hospital was “unlikely to reassure patients”.

Eddie is understood to have accepted the decision with his usual good grace, which probably means he blamed Richie and tried to hit someone with the scythe.

Police have confirmed that there is no continuing risk to the public.

Although residents of Hammersmith may still wish to check their roofs.

Michael has said there was an “amazing amount of hostility” towards him as his career took off. He knew his comedy wouldn’t appeal to everyone, but the level of criticism still surprised him and, by his own admission, it hurt.

Michael McIntyre spent around ten years trying to make it in comedy. When success finally arrived, he expected other comedians to be pleased for him.

That isn’t quite what happened.

One night seems to have stayed with him.

He went to the British Comedy Awards with his wife and won an award. It should have been one of those evenings you remember with a huge smile.

Instead, Michael felt the whole thing had been spoiled because so many jokes were made at his expense.

His comedy was often dismissed as too safe or too observational. Stewart Lee, Bob Mortimer and Vic Reeves were among those who took shots at either Michael or his style over the years.

Meanwhile, audiences were giving a very different verdict.

His tours were selling out arenas. Millions of his DVDs were bought, and he was performing in front of around 16,000 people a night. One major tour was expected to be seen by roughly 600,000 people.

That doesn’t mean everybody has to find him funny. Comedy is personal, and Michael McIntyre was never going to be every comedian’s favourite comedian.

But I do think success gets treated strangely in Britain. Someone can spend years struggling without attracting much attention, then become an easy target the moment the public takes to them.

Michael eventually pushed back. His point was fairly simple: the job is to make people laugh. If filling arenas while doing that is supposedly easy, anyone mocking him is welcome to have a go.

You don’t have to love his comedy to admit he connected with a very large audience. People paid to see him because he made them laugh, and surely that counts for something.

Gimme Gimme Gimme first appeared on BBC Two in January 1999. Kathy starred alongside James Dreyfus, who played Linda’s flatmate Tom.

They were a terrible match, which was exactly why they worked so well together.

Linda La Hughes only had to enter a room and you knew peace and quiet were finished.

Loud, rude and completely sure that every man wanted her, Linda was the sort of person you would avoid in real life. Somehow, Kathy Burke made us look forward to seeing her every week.

Tom dreamed of becoming a successful actor. Linda spent most of her time chasing men and telling wild stories about herself. Neither had much grip on reality, but Linda was in a class of her own.

She believed she was beautiful, charming and irresistible. The fact that almost nobody else agreed never seemed to trouble her.

That was where much of the comedy came from. Linda could say something truly awful, insult everyone nearby and still act as though she was the injured party.

Kathy played her without holding back. Linda wasn’t softened to make her more likeable. She was selfish and often unbearable, yet she was also strangely hard to hate.

The first series ran for six episodes. The sitcom eventually lasted for three series and 19 regular episodes, as well as specials.

Jonathan Harvey wrote the show, while Kathy also worked behind the scenes as a script editor on later episodes.

What makes Linda even more impressive is where the role came in Kathy’s career.

Viewers already knew her as Waynetta Slob and the teenage boy Perry from Harry Enfield and Chums. Both characters showed how easily she could disappear into a role.

Then, only a couple of years before Gimme Gimme Gimme began, Kathy won Best Actress at the Cannes Film Festival for her powerful performance in Nil by Mouth.

Going from that hard, painful drama to Linda La Hughes says a great deal about her range. Plenty of actors can be funny or serious. Kathy could make you forget you were watching the same person.

Her performance as Linda later earned her a British Comedy Award.

More than 25 years after the programme first aired, clips are still passed around online. The clothes have aged and some of the jokes belong very firmly to their time, but Kathy’s performance still lands.

Linda was vain, filthy-minded and gloriously lacking in shame. Television would probably try to make her nicer now, which would completely miss the point.
