French sculptor Maximilien Bourgeois studied at the Paris Academy of Art, Paris, working in bronze, marble and terracotta. The Meissen manufactory acquired two groups in 1895-1896, ‘At the harvest’ (23.5cm) and ‘Returning from the field’ (20.5cm), pictured in slides 1 a d 2, respectively. Unlike Bourgeois’ sculptures cast in other mediums, these models spoke a familiarity to a repertoire its patrons understood better than the ‘new art’ (or, ‘Art Nouveau’, of course) look that not longer after prevailed (and which the Ministry of Finance, who were by now at the helm of running the factory, despised).
Both available to purchase, individually or together.

Going through old files and came across this advert from 2018 that was used in a printed publication to promote our stand at LAPADA fair in Berkeley Square, which we started participating at in 2016. Our display for the 2018 edition had a particular focus on art nouveau and art deco artist-signed pieces made at Meissen.
At lot has changed since 2018, not least our branding and logo (and we now only participate at the fair on odd years), but we still carry the largest range of Meissen pieces from these periods in the UK. Get in touch if you are looking for a particular piece from the most evocative of periods. (And if 18thC or 19thC is more your bag, we have plenty of those too!)

A rare version in biscuit porcelain of the dancer F***y Elssler, a world-famous Austrian prima ballerina who celebrated triumphant success from touring in Europe and America.

Made at Meissen, the design was created by the French painter and sculptor Jean Auguste Barré in 1836 which depicts Elssler as Florida in the dance La Cachucha from the 1836 ballet Le Diable boiteux.

Modelled between 1836 and 1840 with the present example made in circa 1840, 36cm high.
