Matt's real appeal: it hides everyday dust, minor scratches, and small marks far better than a glossy surface. Glossy floors aren't actually "harder to maintain" in a technical sense — they just SHOW wear more visibly, which is why they often get recoated sooner even when the finish itself is still doing its job.

Two ways to get a matt look, and they behave differently:
🔹 Matt lacquer — sits on top as a protective film, low maintenance
🔹 Hardwax oil (Osmo etc.) — penetrates the timber for a more tactile, natural feel, but needs more frequent re-oiling

📈 Red oak ~1,220-1,290 lbf → Hickory ~1,820 → Ebony ~3,080 → African blackwood ~3,670 → Lignum vitae ~4,390 → Quebracho ~4,570 (hardest known, unworkable commercially)
🪵 If durability's your priority without going exotic: Hickory and Brazilian cherry (Jatoba) are genuinely harder than oak and used specifically for that reason
🌳 Oak makes up around 52% of American hardwood forests — its abundance, combined with a great balance of hardness and workability, is exactly why it's everywhere in flooring
