Today’s Feature A Prized Lurcher In The English Countryside, c.1910

A wonderfully characterful survivor from the tradition of British sporting animal portraiture.

This early 20th-century oil painting depicts a chestnut-and-white lurcher standing proudly within an English country landscape, surrounded by summer grasses with distant golden fields beyond.

Signed “J. Warnes” lower right, the dog’s head turns towards the viewer, creating a direct and engaging gaze that gives the portrait considerable individuality.

The reverse retains a G. Rowney & Co., London, “Quality F” prepared-canvas stencil. Quality F canvas is documented from 1892 onwards and is consistent with the work’s proposed circa 1910 dating.

The composition belongs to the wider British sporting and animal-painting tradition associated with artists such as Samuel John Carter (1835–1892). The present painting is not attributed to Carter; the comparison provides art-historical context only.

Provenance is associated with the collection at Lime House, Earls Colne, Essex, home of the late Colonel Peter Charles Edward Fishbourne (1940–2023).
