Our parents are there before us and one day leave us and partners often come later. Siblings are the people who can know us across almost every version of our life. It’s a relationship like no other.

I’ve always bought a rakhi for my brother and for the last few years I’ve started buying one for my sister too.

I like the idea of Rakhi marking the bond between siblings, not just one particular version of that relationship.

Toy Story 5 made me think about social confidence in kids. A child can genuinely love something at home and still avoid it outside if it’s the thing that makes them stand out. Fitting in matters so much when you’re young..sometimes more than whether you actually like the thing or not.

In terms of culture, maybe the work isn’t only teaching kids to be proud of it. It’s giving them enough places where choosing it doesn’t require confidence in the first place.

Our Sheru the Tiger toy we’re building is based around exactly this. Making learning your mother tongue part of play and every day life 🐯

Toy Story 5 is about toys vs tech…alongside the screens, I was thinking more about everything around them..peer pressure, belonging, imagination and what makes kids quietly move on from things they still enjoy.

Kids work out so much about themselves through play..who they are, who they connect with and what feels like theirs. Screens have their place, but they don’t always ask the same things of a child that open-ended play does: to invent the rules, use their imagination to build a whole new world and decide what happens next..

What are your thoughts on toys vs tech?

I know how they take their tea, what they’ll order at a restaurant and what they’ll say before they even say it… but I’ve never asked them some of these 🧡

The kinds of questions that remind you they were a whole person before they became Mum and Dad.

I know them so well as my parents. Maybe not enough as people. 🧡

They used to be such a normal part of life. Someone hosting, always too much food, extra chairs pulled out, the house full, kids eating in the living room or on the stairs, dads at the table, ladies sitting together… and then a few weeks later we’d do it all again at someone else’s house.

I sometimes think about whether our generation will keep the jamvanus going once our parents aren’t the ones organising them anymore.

I really hope we do 🧡

An aunty you barely know offering to make you thepla because your mum is thousands of miles away.

Someone hearing you’ll be alone for Diwali and saying, “You’re coming to ours.”

Someone who met your parents once, asking after them every time since.

Finding out someone’s new to a city and immediately thinking of who you can connect them to.

Being invited home for dinner by someone you met an hour ago.

It’s easy to reduce India to the things that photograph well. The movies, the clothes, the weddings, the food, the festivals. I love all of it.

But this feeling is harder to photograph. It’s the reason another Indian can feel familiar before you even know them.

This photo was from many years ago when I was in Karwar, near Goa. We’d just met this lady outside her house and she invited us to sit together and make rangoli with her.

The way Indians so quickly make you one of their own ❤️
