Carroll could not have foreseen the influence his books would have on the emerging counterculture of the 1960’s. Although, is it that surprising when you look at Tenniel’s illustrations produced a whole Century earlier!
Shown here is the Haight Ashbury Guide Book which includes a colour map of the area, shop locations , important phone numbers and Do’s and Don’ts for visitors, 1967.
The Haight was the epi-centre for the poster art revolution that arrived with the Hippies. Probably the most recognisable example of this movement was The White Rabbit by Joe McHugh from East Totem West. This and other examples of Alice’s influence on the sixties will be on display at our forthcoming exhibition, Summer 26. Be there or be square! ☮️
