MARK+FOLD was founded in 2015, to create an alternative to mass-market stationery. The result is a range of modern notebooks and cards, which celebrate special papers and bindings. Made on a small scale, and individually-numbered, everything we produce has been inspired by materials and the story behind their making. We like using papers made in Scotland and the Lake District, but will go as far a

way as Japan for something truly extraordinary. Our stationery is minimal, modern and elegant. We feel that a notebook belongs to its user, so as designers we exercise restraint and leave things as ‘blank’ as possible, letting the materials speak for themselves. Our process involves hand-making at our London studio, where we bind notebooks using traditional techniques. We also work closely with small specialist factories in the UK and Holland, who share our attention to detail. Since we launched in November 2015, we have released a series of limited edition notebooks, each celebrating a different material or binding technique. Since 2016 we have also run a stationery subscription, which allows our subscribers to follow each new design as it is released. We have been selling online since November 2015, and are proud to have a reached people from San Francisco to Singapore. We take great delight in wrapping items for our customers, and hand-writing receipts. In July 2017, we are opening our first shop North London. Our very special selection of stockists grows gradually over time, currently including Oliver Spencer, SCP, Harvey Nichols, The Garnered, Another Country and as of June 2017 several US stockists from New York to Aspen. Since 2016, we have been designing and making a dedicated range of stationery in collaboration with Bamford, and have some exciting collaborative projects to announce later this year. 2027 Diaries are almost here! For many months now we’ve been busy working on these behind the scenes - selecting beautiful papers, gathering inspiration from all sorts of places not least our amazing trip to Japan in the spring. We’ve been dotting the i’s and crossing the t’s and now things are being printed and bound so very soon we’ll be doing the big reveal of our 2027 Collection! Preorder for a sneak peek and 10% off.

The Mark+Fold diary was designed in close collaboration with our customers back in 2017. Loved for its stripped back, minimal layout, and beautiful quality paper, it’s now in its 10th year and the design remains the same as ever. We’re particularly proud of our thread sewn binding which makes it flop open beautifully flat for joyful, uninterrupted planning sessions.

Each year we provide a classic version and a special edition, plus a linen bound. We keep some favourite colours the same each year, and always introduce something new as well. The typography on the special edition is an opportunity for us to play with the form of the numbers each year - and we can’t wait to share what we’ve come up with for 2027!

Members of our Stationery Subscription, and pre-order customers get a sneak preview ahead of launch in August.

You can now explore our Supplier Map and shop by region. From paper-making in Cumbria, to printing in Aberdeen, hand-binding in Hackney and leather work in Walsall.

We have always proudly transparent about where and how every item is made, for two reasons:

One, it’s simply beautiful to see how thing are made, to watch the hypnotic machines turning, to meet the people who make it all happen and share our perfectionism. (In case you missed it last week we took customers to Cumbria to see first-hand how our paper is made - see previous reel).

Two, it’s important to understand where it all comes from. It helps you make informed choices about what you’re buying and which businesses you want to support. Because “every pound you spend is a vote for the world you want.”

UK Paper Mill Tour, Part Two | Hand-making at Paper Foundation

Last week we took our ‘behind the scenes’ approach to a whole new level and invited a group of 10 customers to come along and see first-hand how our paper is made at a historic UK paper mill called James Cropper, as well as the charity set up in 2016 in the same town, called Paper Foundation, which produces hand-made paper using traditional techniques and beautiful machinery collected from retiring artisans whose traditions would be lost without this brilliant team keeping them going.

We have always proudly shared every last detail of how our paper is made, where it is printed, who binds it for you. We feel it’s important to share these stories, not only because they are beautiful to see and understand, but also so that you know where your stationery comes from and can make informed choices about which brands you want to support. So it was fantastic to gather a group of Mark+Fold paper enthusiasts to join us for this fascinating field trip.

Huge thanks to everyone who made this day possible - our wonderful hosts at James Cropper and Paper Foundation - specially Jordan, Georgie and John, Tom, Mark and Jony. And thanks to all our customers who travelled the length and breadth of the country to join us!

We use papers made at both of these mills, so it was a great opportunity to recognise some of our favourite papers — from notebook covers in rust, mustard and flint, to our hand-made Community Clothing recycled denim papers.

✏️ Launching today ✏️ the Mark+Fold Pencil Case + Pouch

When we ask people about where the stationery obsession began, pencil cases so often come up — the memory of shopping for a new pencil case at the start of term, and the feeling of optimism and confidence this used to bring. So inevitably we have often been asked « When will Mark+Fold do a pencil case? » And the answer is now!

In addition to the pencil case is an A5 pouch, in response to another repeated request for something to keep notebooks safe and clean on the go. You told us « It should hold a bundle of notebooks and other bits and pieces — something you can zip up and stuff in your bag. »

Needless to say, we have worked tirelessly to refine all the details. As always, our aim is to create a classic — something that will bring you a lot of joy when you sit down at your desk to use it day after day, year after year. From the choice of fabric, to the Swiss-made zip, to working with a North London factory right on our doorstep, it’s been a labour of love and we are so pleased to introduce this new mini collection, launching for pre-orders today (delivery July).
