What is a celebrant registrar?

If you have spoken to the Register office and they have told you that they have a celebrant and they have also told you that you don’t need to bother with booking a celebrant to conduct your ceremony be sure you understand the terminology and what it means !

A 'celebrant registrar' or 'registrar celebrant' is a term you may hear some local authorities using. This is because two registrars are required to be present at ceremonies – one to conduct the ceremony (who may be referred to as the 'celebrant registrar/registrar celebrant ') and one to oversee the signing of the marriage schedule .

A celebrant registrar is NOT the same as a Independent celebrant such as myself.

As an independent celebrant I create ceremonies from scratch to celebrate life’s key moments especially weddings. These ceremonies do not currently have any legal status which means they are creative affairs free from any restrictions or limitations. My ceremonies are ‘traditional with a twist’.

To form a legal marriage registration you need a registrar but you can opt to visit the Register office to complete this process. The Registrar does not need to come to your chosen wedding venue to do this.

You will need to opt for a statutory registration (sometimes called a simple registration) from the choices available . These registration slots are few and far between and not always well advertised on Registration services websites but they do all have to offer them by law. The cost is minimal.

You do NOT have to have a celebrant registrar conduct your wedding ceremony on your wedding day. You can choose an independent celebrant like me to create and conduct your wedding ceremony.

Your marriage registration can be done before or after your ceremony- a few days before, a few weeks before or even in some cases a few months or years before. Most couples choose to do their legal registration a few days or weeks before their wedding ceremony

So what does a celebrant offer you that a Registrar Celebrant doesn’t?

♥️you can choose your celebrant, someone you connect with and trust

♥️you can get to know your celebrant and they will get to know you

♥️you can choose exactly what is said and what is done in your ceremony

♥️your ceremony will be created from scratch just for you

♥️your celebrant won’t place limitations or restrictions on you, your guests or your ceremony content

♥️your celebrant will have all the time in the world to listen to you and get to know you

So select the right person for the task. Work with the registration service to complete your legal registration and then work with the celebrant of your choice to create a personal ceremony that is the perfect fit for the two of you.

Hope this clarifies things! ♥️

P.s the photo shows one of my couples signing a decorative, commemorative certificate that has no legal status. It is a special keepsake of their celebratory wedding ceremony
