This cello had quite an accident. I’m not a magician, but I’ve done my best to carefully retouch the varnish and minimise the appearance of the crack.

Structurally, it’s now secure again — with a soundpost patch and internal studs fitted to reinforce the area properly.

Always satisfying to bring an instrument back to life and give it many more years to sing.

Yesterday, my last working day before Christmas ended on the best possible note.
I was kindly invited to exhibit my instruments at the South London Youth Orchestra’s end-of-year concert. Fantastic performances, brilliant young musicians, and it was so lovely to see a few of my customers and musician friends there. A truly special way to start the festive break!

I know it’s been a while since my last post here. The reason is simple — the workshop has been very busy, leaving little time to share updates. There’s been lots of restoration work and a few new instruments made along the way.

I’ll try to share a few things sooner rather than later, and as always, it’s a real pleasure to see my customers and musician friends in my London workshop.

Big or small, every instrument has its story-and sometimes, its struggle. A few weeks ago, these two came into my workshop with similar neck issues, and today they are both ready. The bass underwent a full neck graft, while the violin had its neck reset to achieve the correct neck angle. Precision, patience and a love for luthiery brought them back to life!

I had the privilege of working on this stunning 18th century cello by Benjamin Banks. After adjusting the setup and soundpost, it now offers even greater playability and enhanced sound. It's always a pleasure to bring the best out of such a historic instrument!

Two brothers… meeting for the first time. It’s great to have two of our cellos back in the workshop for some TLC. Will they meet again on stage? Who knows, but they are both ready to keep their players happy!

I think it’s clear why I decided to change the bass bar in this cello. This will significantly improve the sound quality too. Can’t wait to hear it soon!

Sometimes, working late into the night can be quite relaxing. Especially when we are thicknessing, allowing us to play with the light and showcase the humps beautifully.
