I wanted to wait until the family had posted and it is with great sadness that we mourn the loss of another Burgess Park legend. Ray ‘Bunter’ Parsons was a constant smiling presence whenever he could get over the park and he will be sadly missed by all who knew him.

Condolences to the whole family.

For anybody who hasn’t heard the news yet…

Steve-Alan Lowin and Zach Harris met with Peter from the Parks team and proposed the idea of reinstating the Club along with some well needed processes to ensure we don't lose it again.

The consensus is that we will be working with the council to have a good relationship with the old Club members as well as the new day ticket anglers.

The council have a responsibility to repair swims and carry out general maintenance of the lakes. As a club we will be able to manage the logistics of how the lake is run, updating the rules, stocking projects, opening the other side of the lake and much more.
It is still early days but it would be great to have as many people back on the lakes as possible so we can fill out the membership slots early and use the funds on the lake right way.

News has filtered through that our old mate Charlie, a permanent fixture at the lake during the summer, has passed away.

I'm going to unofficially name the swim next to the bird sanctuary Charlies swim. It is where I picture him being most often, camped out for weeks in the hope that something other than a Tench picks up his single hook baits.

He will be greatly missed.

Can I remind every follower of this page, you are not allowed to fish from within the bird sanctuary. It is obvious where this is. If you need to climb a fence, you’re in the wrong part.

I know of at least 2 people in the last week who have done it and I have photos of you. There are swims to fish from, enjoy them.

Over the weekend, the members of the Burgess Park Angling Club all received a letter from our 'good friends' over at the council.

The letter states that as of April 1st 2017, there will be no night fishing allowed at the lake by anybody. Clearly the council are seeking to destroy what we have as a community outlet, and ruin the future sport for many young & old anglers based locally. I'll leave any decision up to the individual, but it's my duty to pass the message on. Day tickets are supposedly available via their online purchasing system as of today, and they will continue to 'patrol the lake daily'.

Please pass on this message to all members in case they didn't get a letter. In case you want to voice your concerns or ask any questions, please phone Louise at the council on 0207 525 1142. You can also visit her in person at Number 5, Chumleigh Gardens.

Would like to wish a Merry Christmas to all of the members of The Burgess Park Angling Club. It may well be the end of the road for what was the old club, but let's hope the new year brings a new start and even more improvements and quality fish coming from the lake.

I thought some people would be interested to see this photo I found a little while ago. It dates back to 1982 and shows the original lake, with the old fountain and 3 boats on the lake. A nice memory and hopefully we'll be showing todays photos to the next group of fishermen in 30 years time.

We also had the Police diving team who did a sweep of the lake, both sides along the bridge. They do this every now and then, to recover any goods or weapons that may have been discarded.

The fishing club made a point of asking for the bridge to be checked for any holes in the fence, and there was no evidence of this.

A few small items were recovered including an open safe that had been dumped in the lake. Thanks to the police divers again for their work.

Most of you will be aware of the recent issues that have taken place, and Southwark council have decided they won't allow the angling club to take charge of the running of the lake, at least for the time being. This post is an update of the current situation.

All current members are allowed to see out their current year, as paid up until the end of March 2017. There won't be as many patrols, so can all members do what they can to keep an eye out for any issues, and report them to the council who should now be taking on the roles that the angling club used to see to. You can always message me here and I'll help where possible.

Park officers and wardens have been told to check for permits. As frustrating as it may be, can I ask all members to cooperate with them, and just produce the permit when asked. Again if there are any problems, just take the details of the official down and report it, rather than risk any more ill feeling between the angling club and the council.

We are hoping to set up another committee, with the help and inclusion of the council, but this seems slow progress at the moment, although I will be on the case of those at Southwark Council to get this done soon.

All members should be receiving a letter from the council, giving an update of the situation. Anyone who doesn't have one will be able to get one from me. I have a list of those members who the council haven't been able to post letters to, so will be trying to do this, once they have sent me a copy of the letter.

Regarding the day ticket situation, the council have said they won't be dealing with cash, and intend to set up an online form to deal with day tickets. I am concerned personally, and I feel this will lead to issues in the future, but it doesn't affect any member, so hopefully these will all be addressed and sorted before that is the case.

If you have any questions, send them to me here and I'll try and deal with them as best I can. Can I also ask that the publicising of the lake be kept to a minimum please, at least until the lake is staffed better, and everyone keep an eye out for anyone behaving suspiciously, especially regarding the welfare of our fish.

Burgess Park Angling Club recently received news from the council that will affect the club and fishing related matters surrounding the lake.

There is a meeting to explain what is going on. This meeting will be held at 7:30pm this coming Wednesday, 17th August, in the usual sports centre next to the football pitch near the lake. All members are encouraged to attend as it may affect you and the future of the club. Non members are welcome if you would like to be kept updated. If you have any questions then fire them across here, otherwise we will do what we can to fill you in next week. Until then, nothing has changed so continue to fish as you have been, and as usual keep an eye out for anyone fishing who shouldn't be, and report anything seen to a bailiff or me here if you need to.
